WHAT IS ART AND DRAMA?
• Dramatic and Arts in education is an important means of
stimulating CREATIVITY IN PROBLEM SOLVING. It can CHALLENGE
STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS about their world and about themselves.
Dramatic exploration can provide students with an outlet for emotions,
thoughts, and dreams that they might not otherwise have means to express. A
student can, if only for a few moments, BECOME ANOTHER, explore a new
role, try out and experiment with various personal choices and solutions to
very real problems-problems from their own life, or problems faced by
characters in literature or historical figures. This can happen in a SAFE
ATMOSPHERE, where actions and consequences can be examined,
discussed, and in a very real sense EXPERIENCED without the dangers and
pitfalls that such experimentation would obviously lead to in the "real" world.
Importance of drama and arts in education:
1.Teaches Self-Expression: Children learn about the importance of self-expression
through the use of drama and arts in education and through creative-expression,
their perception and worldview are broader which equips them with the skills to face
adversities late in life.
2.Life Skill Training: It imparts students with various life skills like teamwork,
compassion, cooperation and collaboration.
3.Learn Constructive Criticism: Children also learn about taking constructive criticism
and feedback in a way that helps them become better individuals.
4.Contributes to Personality Development: The use of drama and art in education also
accelerates personality development in students.
5.Find their Voice: Through theatre and performing arts, students are able to find their
unique ‘voice’ that helps them explore their inner talents, skills and competencies.
6.Problem-solving Skills: Through creative art forms, students learn about the value of
problem-solving in every situation as they learn to be in a group, work around
various things to thrive as a team and become superb at problem-solving!
7.Learn to Lead: Using drama and art in education also teaches students to don the
Objectives of Drama and Art in Education
• Students will learn about theatre and performing arts and transform
simple stories into wonderful scripts.
• Students will be equipped with key critical thinking skills, performance
skills, speaking and writing skills, public speaking skills and teamwork.
• Through drama and art in education, students can also be imparted
with the knowledge of pronunciation, intonation as well as
storytelling.
• Language learning skills are also strengthened through the use of
drama and art in education.
• Students will also know about body language, impromptu
performance and presenting a story in front of an audience.
Implementing Art in Learning
• Making use of art forms is the best way to attract young students to learning. It is hard
for a teacher to tell a student in kindergarten about the benefits of education. I bet
even Francis Bacon reciting his iconic essay ‘Of Studies’ to a group of kindergarten
students would fail terribly to convince students at the tender age to read. In order to
start the learning process for a student at a young age, art is the best tool. The
graphical representation of texts, assigning a picture to an object and to tell a story
through motion graphics or toys has proven to be effective in exposing the young
students to educational journey. Some of the prominent activities you can practice
with children to help them learn better are:
• Painting & Drawing
• Using visuals to learn something
• Transforming complicated concepts into rhymes and songs
• Using puppets to explain a concept
• Creating stories from a single word
PUPPET MAKING
• Puppetry as a learning tool provides teachers with one of the most inexpensive aids in the
classroom. The benefits of puppets are many. They allow children to escape into an imaginary
world. Using puppetry in teaching provides opportunities for children to express themselves in
many different forms
• Puppets can be an engaging and useful way to help students develop emotionally and grow their
language and communication skills.
• In kindergarten and primary classrooms:
• Puppets are a good way to deliver information to students and help them retain it.
• Student use of puppets helps them to retell information they’ve learned and remember it.
• Teachers can use puppets to demonstrate proper pronunciation to help students develop language
skills.
• Puppets can help shy students feel comfortable speaking in front of the class because the puppet is
answering, not them
A puppet is a doll that you can move,
either by pulling strings which are
attached to it or by putting your hand
inside its body and moving your
fingers.
MASK MAKING
• Mask making is a rewarding and creative process. It is an absorbing
activity that helps focus children to the task at hand. Masks can be
fun, mysterious and even frightening. When a mask is completed and
worn for the first time a new character is born.
• Objectives
• Students will:
• assess the personality traits possessed by a book character they
enjoyed.
• use strong adjectives to describe the character.
• use supporting detail that explains each trait they chose
Paper-mâché
literally "chewed paper", "pulped paper", or "mashed
paper") is a composite material
consisting of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced
with textiles, bound with an adhesive,
such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste.
•Today papier-mâché sculptures are used as an
economical building material for a variety
of traditional and ceremonial activities, as
well as in arts and crafts.

Paper masks
Creating papier-mâché masks is common among
elementary school children and craft lovers.
Either one's own face or a balloon
can be used as a mold.
This is common
during Halloween time as a facial mask
complements the costume.[
MADHUBANI PAINTING

• Madhubani art is a style of Indian painting,

practiced in the Mithila region of the Indian
subcontinent. This painting is done with a
variety of tools, including fingers, twigs,
brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks and using
natural dyes and pigments. It is characterised
by its eye-catching geometrical patterns.
WARLI PAINTING
Warli is the vivid expression of daily and
social events of the Warli tribe of
Maharashtra, used by them to embellish the
walls of village houses. This was the only
means of transmitting folklore to a populace
not acquainted with the written word. The
symbolism in Warli art represents the circle
of life. The triangle symbolizes mountain
and trees. The square indicates a sacred
enclosure for the mother goddess,
symbolizing fertility, while the circle
represents the sun and the moon. The upward
facing triangle in a Warli painting represents
the male while the downward facing triangle
represents the female.
ORIGAMI MANDALA
The word 'mandala' means 'circle' in Sanskrit,
and mandalas have a deep spiritual or
cosmic meaning in many cultures and traditions. For our
#Maydala purposes, a mandala is any circular design
exhibiting pattern and symmetry. Mandala making
is accessible to all. The repetitive nature of these
designs means that drawing them can be a
wonderfully absorbing and meditative process,
and it's a process that results in stunning
geometrical patterns. Origami is the ancient
Japanese art of folding paper, “ori” meaning to
fold and “kami” meaning paper.
INTEGRATING PEDAGOGY SUBJECT WITH
MADHUBANI ART.
• Through the use of Madhubani painting, the children can be
introduced to “national bird of India”. A poem based on the peacock
bird can be explained by making the children understand what makes
“Peacock” a royal bird.
• The students by looking at the painting of peacock understand the
beauty of it.
• The teacher will first let the students look at the painting carefully and
let them observe as per their understanding.Later she will explain the
minute details by explain the poem which is to be taught.
* Making the students understand the poem by integrating art in the teaching process .
WORKSHOP
• Date of the Workshop- 4th March 2021
• Topic- DRAMA AND ART IN EDUCATION
• Conducted by -Dr. Bharti Dogra
• A Webinar was organized by our college and the guest speaker was invited explaining us the importance of
using drama and art.
• She started by incorporating Gardener’s Multiple Intelligence Theory in Drama in education and explained
how it can be used as a pedagogical tool in a constructivist way. Various techniques and ways were shown on
how drama can be included in the teaching-learning process to bring out the desirable outcome. Drama
requires collaboration and hence there is an ample scope for social interaction and nurturing the talents of the
child.
• Drama is one such activity which can nurture all eight intelligences. The common form of Drama
implemented in the process of imparting education is a ‘Role Play’.
• *My experience: Overall, the session was quite informative and something new to learn. The techniques
taught by the guest speaker can be applied in our teaching environment to make the whole process more
engaging. There were many strategies which were new for me such as Hot seating and freeze frame. All this
can help us in our interaction with the students and they will be useful in some situation or the other. We
must know the techniques and when to use what. Drama and Art is just limited to the for walls of the college
but it will help the students in their over all understanding and perceiving of things in life.
Some glimpses from the workshop:
WHY SHOULD THESE THINGS INCORPORATED
IN OUR TEACHING ?
• Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social
skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
• These activities really help us to make us a good teacher and also a multi tasked teacher.
• As a future teacher we will not only teach a particular subject to our students but can also
teach different activities such as- art and craft, dance, music, yoga and etc. which will help
them to find out their interests.
• From learning of all these activities will help us to become a good teacher because now a
days students love those teachers who help them in different tasks and not just limited to one.
• Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to
understand and a fun learning process.
• As we know that teacher is not a teacher, teacher is a facilitators, a friend, a guider and a
person who motivates the students in every aspects.
