ABSTRACT
• This project mainly deals with the improvement of the power quality
of the output of the three phase single stage Solar Photo Voltaic
plant by coordinating it with the Unified Power Quality Conditioner
(UPQC).
• The UPQC contains shunt and series voltage compensators
connected in back to back connection.
• These are used to extract the power from the PV array as well as
compensating the voltage and load current harmonics.
• The compensator injects the voltage in-phase/out of phase with
point of common coupling(PCC) voltage during swag and swell
conditions to improve the voltage at load side.
• Thus by combining the Solar PV Array with UPQC we can obtain
clean energy with improved power quality.
INTRODUCTION:
• Due to the use of power electronic devices, nonlinear current
flowing through the instrument causes generation of harmonics as
shown in fig .
• The increasing demand of customers at load side may cause voltage
sag which may affect on quality of power.
• It is essential that utility will supply power with best quality and
permissible range.
• Utility should provide supply reliably and continuously.
• Hence in order to maintain stable voltage at grid as well as load side,
multipurpose device is required.
• Hence this project deals with use of UPQC device with solar PV.
OBJECTIVE
• Because of the intensity of light, light irradiance, change of angle of
incident light on the solar panel, output current and voltage may
vary.
• So we are trying to smoothen the fluctuations of these voltage and
current by integrating the Solar PV Array with the Unified Power
Quality Conditioner(UPQC).
DESIGN:
• The PV-UPQC is designed for a three-phase system.
• The PV-UPQC consists of shunt and series compensator connected
with a common DC-bus.
• The shunt compensator is connected at the load side.
• The solar PV array is directly integrated to the DC-link of UPQC
through a reverse blocking diode.

DESIGN AND CONTROL OF UPQC:
• UPQC – Unified Power Quality Conditioner
• UPQC is a multifunction power conditioner that can be used to
compensate various voltage disturbances of the power supply, to
correct voltage fluctuations, and to prevent the harmonic load
current from entering the power system
• The main subsystems of PV-UPQC are the shunt compensator and
the series compensator.
• The shunt compensator compensates for the load power quality
problems such as load current harmonics and load reactive power.
• The series compensator protects the load from the grid side power
quality problems such as voltage sags/swells by injecting
appropriate voltage in phase with the grid voltage.
ADVANTAGES:

The main advantages of the proposed system are as follows:

• Clean energy generation and power quality improvement.
• Voltage and current quality improvement.
• Improved load current compensation.
• Stable under various dynamic conditions of voltage sags/swells,
load unbalance and irradiation variation.
CONCLUSION:
• It is observed that PV-UPQC mitigates the harmonics caused by
nonlinear load and maintains the THD of grid current under limits
of IEEE-519 standard.
• The system is found to be stable under variation of irradiation,
voltage sags/swell and load unbalance.
• The performance of d-q control particularly in load unbalanced
condition has been improved through the use of moving average
filter.
• It can be seen that PV-UPQC is a good solution for modern
distribution system by integrating distributed generation with
power quality improvement.
• Thus we can generate clean energy with improved power quality by
integrating the Solar PV with UPQC.
