Core wall structure
INTRODUCTION
 Increase in the construction of tall buildings
both residential, commercial and the modern
trend is towards more tall structures.
 The effects of lateral loads like wind loads,

earthquake loads and blast forces are

attaining increasing importance.
 Almost every designer is faced with the

problems of Providing adequate strength

and stability against lateral loads
What is CWS ?
 Core wall is the combination of the concrete
wall which is arranged in various shape core
manner, and generally located at the
geometrical centre or off centre position of
the building to avoid the various types of
forces.
 It is central of arterial part of a multistory

building that integrates functions and

service needs for established occupants.
CHARACTERISTIC
 Shape of core
 Number of cores
 Location of cores
 Arrangement of cores
 Geometry of building as generator

of core form
Why we use CWS ?
 It resist the torsional forces.
 Also it minimize the lateral deflection,

rotation, & over turning moments etc.

 It gives the more seismic resistance

stability to the structure than shear

wall.
 It reduce the lateral sway also provide

large strength and stiffness to building.

FUNCTION
 Tying the building together to act as a
unit
 To maximize flexibility in layout
 As core wall systems to provide the

necessary lateral stability for the

building
 Resist lateral forces from any direction
 Carries gravity loads
PLACEMENT
Material
 Sufficientstiffness fire resistance
Reinforced concrete.
 High strength of steel.
 Jumping type form work (steel).
Advantages
 Reduces the no. of columns.
 We get convenient max. space for access the

floors.
 Thus it is effectively useful for office purpose.
 Access in some cases equidistance from all

sides.
 We get mostly outer perimeter of the floor

open with glass.

 Thus light ventilation is effectively access.
Disadvantages
 It requires an access corridor around its
perimeter.
