(Penicillin)
• Previously known as penicillum notatum
What is • Deuteromycetes Fungi
• Species of fungus in the genus penicillium
Penicillium
• Common in subtropical regions and can be found on
salted food products
Chrysogenum
• It has rarely been reported as a cause of human
disease

? • Many other species of genus penicillium, P.

Chrysogenum usually reproduce by forming dry
chains of spores or conidia.
• Penicillium chrysogenum is the source of antibiotic
The Strain
SCIENCE DISCOVERY OF
PENICILLIN
• First Discovered by Alexander fleming on 1928
• In 1939 Howard Florey a pathology professor at
Oxford University with his colleague were able to
purify penicillin and test its effectivess on animals
before the first trial with a human.
• In 12th February of 1941 Albert Alexander was the
first receiver of first dose of penicillin.
SCIENCE DISCOVERY OF
PENICILLIN
• Penicillin was mass produced and used to treat infections in wounded
and ill soldiers
• The discovery of penicillin decreased the death rate from bacterial
pneumonia in soldiers from 18% to 1%
• In 1945 Fleming, Florey and his colleague Ernst Chain received a
noble prize in physiology or medicine for their discovery of penicillin
SCIENTISTS CONTRIBUTED TO PENICILLIN
ANTIBIOTICS
How Penicillin works?

• Penicillins block the protein struts that link the peptidoglycans

SCIENCE MEDICINE OF PENICILLIN

• 10% of people who are allergic in

this antibiotic they most often given
cephalosporinc (another β-lactam
antibiotic)
SIDE EFFECTS OF PENICILLIN ANTIBIOTIC
• Penicillins generally cause few side effects. The most common side
effects reported include abdominal pain, headache, rash, diarrhea,
and taste perversion.
• Pencillium chrysogenum previously known
as penicillium notatum is responsible for
saving many lives by producing the first
known modern antibiotic penicillin.
• Greatly perfected the treatment of
infection cause by bacteria
• It is a source of other antibiotics as a
therapeutic medicine
