A. Case Study
Seven Seas International : Reimagining Hospitality Through Technology

• You are selected as a Management Trainee for Seven Seas International, a

chain of 5 Star and 7 Star hotels, that is globally very popular

• In the Pandemic, Seven Seas shifted their focus from old world hospitality,
to new improved and technologically effective hospitality model.

• The case study lists the areas of challenge and ideation for the hospitality
provider

• Post pandemic guests want a touch-free experience. They want a keyless access to their
rooms. They want touch-free room service. They also want that all the gadgets in the
room like the curtains, television, AC, etc. should be controlled without touching any
object.
• From a convenience perspective, guests do not want to wait at the front office for check-
in.They want a “pass through” directly to their rooms. At the same time, they are also
concerned about security. The “pass through” experience should be such that no
unauthorised person/s can enter the guest room and get access to the guest’s
belongings.
• The guests’ “dil maange more!” .Some of the guests have demanded that they should be
able to picked up from the airport by such cars that have the technology to control the AC
in their respective booked rooms from the car itself. In fact, the technology should be
intelligent enough to know the preference of the guest with regard to the temperature
settings in the room and set the temperature accordingly without a manual input from the
guest.

• The guests also want out of the world in-room experience. They want food to be ordered on
voice-controlled devices. The guests also expect that the voice-controlled devices should be
able to “suggest” cuisine to the guests based on the past data of guest preferences and the
innovative recipes prepared by the top chefs of the restaurant.
• After a hard day’s work who would like to have the dinner within the boring four walls of the
hotel room? At the same time most guests are too tired to go to the in-hotel restaurants to
have their dinner. Some guests want technology to artificially transform the boring walls such
that it appears to the guests that they are having the dinner under a moon lit sky!
• While SSI is planning to take up hi-tech projects to provide the guests the ultimate of
technology enabled luxury, cost is a concern for the management. The management intends
to take multiple measures to optimize the cost with the use of technology. The management
is contemplating using robots for ferrying luggage and providing room service. Robots are
planned to be introduced in the kitchen to prepare routine food items. SSI is also
contemplating using food printing in in-house production of candies and chocolates.
• The star chefs of SSIs are capable of doing much more than what they are doing at present.
Once their time gets freed from mundane food production, they can devote time in designing
new cuisines. After all, the SSI chefs are the world’s best food designers!

• SSI has always been obsessed with the satisfaction of guests. However, guests of today
do not express their unhappiness directly. The banquet manager may not be having any
clue that the guest did not like the food till the complaint of the customer becomes viral in
the social media. Can SSI take help of technology to monitor the social media
algorithmically and alert the customer service if there are any adverse reviews. It would
be even better if technology could be used to proactively predict if a guest is not happy
with the food by analysing signals like the speed of eating, way of eating, facial
expressions, etc. Can technology be used for this?
• Guests have become very sensitive about food. The banquet manager has to face many
awkward questions like “how do you prove that these organic vegetables have really
come from an organic farm,” “how can you assure us that the ice cream you served was
not refrozen after it melted while transporting to your hotel,” etc. SSI is exploring
technology that can track provenance of food and assure the guests with answers to
questions as above.
• During the last pandemic SSI faced a major problem with their revenue management
software. The hotel management ERP where revenue and other major operations of SSI
were managed was hosted in a server that was located in the global headquarters of SSI.
The ERP could be operated from the computers located in the offices of SSI. The ERP
software could not be accessed from home where most of the staff was working during
lockdown. SSI intends to explore technology solutions to the problem it faced due to
nonaccessibility of computers in the office.
