 Introduction
• Goa is located on the southwestern part of India which gives it a wonderful scenery and
a place preferred by the tourists all around the globe. The Arabian sea forms the
western coast of Goa with a beautiful seashore. It is surrounded by the states of
Maharashtra to the north and Karnataka to the east and south. It is separated from
the Deccan plateau by the Western Ghats. Talking about the size it is the smallest by
area and fourth-smallest by population.
• Its capital is Panaji. The largest city is Vasco Da Gama which is named after the
Portuguese sailor who first arrived in India. The art and culture of the Portuguese can
still be seen in Goa. The Portuguese voyaged to the Indian subcontinent in the early
16th century as merchants but soon invaded over the area making it a part of
Portuguese India for until 450 years after which India annexed it in 1961. It’s official
language is Konkani which is spoken by most of the people there.

Pre-history
Rock art engravings and rock tools
found in Goa indicates early human
traces.  Rock engravings of animals,
tectiforms and other designs are found
in the Kajur region. Petroglyphs,
cones, stone-axe, and choppers dating
to 10,000 years ago have been found in
various locations in Goa, including
Kazur, Mauxim, and the Mandovi-
Zuari basin.

History
Early history
In the 3 rd century BC Goa was under the
Mauryan empire and was ruled by the
great Buddhist ruler Ashoka. Buddhist
monks laid the foundation of Buddhism
in Goa . From then Goa was ruled by
different groups until 1312 when Delhi
Sultanate took over it but dew to weak
control soon lost it. It ended with the
defeat of Bijapur sultan Yusuf Adil
Shah by the Portuguese in 1510.

Portuguese period
After the defeat of Bijapur sultan Yusuf Adil
Shah the Portuguese set up a permanent
settlement in Velha Goa and continued to
rule for four and a half century until 1961
when India annexed Goa from the
Portuguese. During the reign of the
Portuguese the present day capital of Goa
was named as Cidade da Nova Goa.

History
Contemporary period
Its After India’s independence in 1947
India asked the Portuguese to return the
part of Goa annexed by Portuguese but
they refused and at last on 19th of
December 1961 the Indian Army took
over the Goa by operation Vijay and
along with Goa Daman and Diu was also
annexed and on 30th of May 1987 Goa
officially became an India state.

 Culture
Goa can be seen with a mixture of both eastern and
western cultures because of the Portuguese who ruled this
small part of the Indian subcontinent for about 450 years
and left a great impact on goan culture. Some of the local
festivals are Christmas, Easter, Carnival, Diwali,
Chavoth, Samvatsar padvo, Dasara etc.
The highest civilian award of Goa is the Gomant
Vibhusan Award which is given by the government of Goa
since 2010.

Dance and Music
Goa’s traditional dance forms are
Dekhnni, Fugdi, Corridinho, Mando,
Dulpod and Fado which shows the
Indian culture while in music western
instruments like piano, violin are very
famous in Goa and are used in churches
during prayers.
Goa is also marked as the origin of Goa
trance.

Theatre
Goa’s Some f the main art forms of Goa
are Natak, Tiatr and Jagor. Other art
forms are Ranmale, Dashavatari ,etc.
Stories from Ramayana and
Mahabharata Along with some social
topics are narrated with dance and
music. Western musical instruments such
as drums and keyboards are part of the
show.

Cinema
As we all know that Bollywood
is the film industry of India
similarly Goa has its own
Konkani cinema which makes
movies in Konkani language
the regional language of Goa,
some parts of Maharashtra,
Karnataka, and some parts of
Kerala. The first full-length
Konkani film was Mogacho
Anvdda, released on 24 April
1950, and was produced and
directed by A. L.Jerry
Braganza.

Food
Rice with fish curry (xit
koddi in Konkani) is the staple
diet in Goa. Goan food can be
divided into Goan Catholic and
Goan Hindu Cuisine both
having different test and
cooking styles. Pork dishes like
Vindalho, Xacuti, chouriço,
and Sorpotel are cooked for
major occasions among
the Goan Catholics. Exotic
vegetables like stew is famous
dish during the festivals of
both Hindus and Christians.
Culture
Architecture
Rice Goan architecture shows
a combination of both Ottoman
and Portuguese styles. Many
churches and monuments in
Goa represent the Portuguese
architecture very well. The
modern temple architecture is
a mixture of Dravidian,
Hemadpanthi, Islamic and
Portuguese architecture. The
original Goan temple
architecture was demolished by
the Portuguese and churches
were built in there place.
 conclusion
Goa is visited by a large number of tourists every year
because of its beautiful coast, beautiful monuments, world
heritage listed architecture, diverse flora and fauna , wildlife
sanctuaries like Dr Salim Ali wildlife sanctuary etc,. Goa is the
richest state of Goa with highest GDP per capita-two and a
half times that of India. Goa’s primary industry is tourism. It
gets 12% of foreign tourist arrivals in India. Goa’s tourism
includes two seasons winter and summer. During winter
tourists from abroad visit Goa and during summer people
from across India visit Goa. The rich culture and architecture
of Goa is also famous world wide.
