Panaji was a tiny village until the mid-18th century, when repeated plagues forced the
Portuguese to abandon their capital of Velha Goa (Old Goa, or Ela). Panaji became the capital
in 1843. The town contains colonial houses and plazas, and by law all the houses must be 
whitewashed annually. Chiefly an administrative centre, Panaji in the 1970s grew in

highly developed. Numerous Portuguese and Maratha ruins can be found in the environs. Pop.

Located on the banks of the Mandovi River, the


city has cobblestone streets lined with colorful
villas an buildings from the Portuguese colonial
era. Palm-fringed Miramar Beach sits at the
confluence of the river and the Arabian Sea. Set on
a hill overlooking the city is the baroque Our Lady
of Immaculate Conception Church, built in 1619.T
CULTURE

Any mention or talk of Goa’s culture would be incomplete without paying rich
tribute to its amazing religious harmony. After all, there are not many places in
India where Ganesh Chaturthi and Holi is celebrated with as much fervor and
passion as Christmas. In fact in Goa Christmas is celebrated in such a grand way
that its colorful celebration attracts thousands of tourists from all across the world.
This unique harmony that Goa brings forth between local Christians and Hindus
does make its culture very vibrant and colorful.

Panaji or for that matter entire Goa state is a place where the cultures of east and
west seamlessly fuses together to bring forth a very unique cosmopolitan
culture. Such a cosmopolitan and unique culture in fact doesn’t exist in any other THEY MOSTLY

The purpose of the documentation of heritage buildings in Panaji was to notify


structures of heritage value, thus producing a reference for protection of heritage
buildings in Panaji.
The study identified, mapped, listed and graded heritage structures based on a
survey conducted to note the historic and architectural significance of a
structure along with its contribution to a heritage streetscape few elements of
them are Sao Tome, Fontainhas, Mala, Portais, CBD (Central Business
District), Altinho, Campal and Ribandar.

A need for a notified heritage listing of structures and precincts in Goa had been recognized.
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

 Goa traditional architecture had a unique vibrancy


and used very interesting materials, we present some.
 Goa traditional architecture had a language of it
sown, intricate, beautiful and very artistic.
 The chief building materials involved in a typical Goa
house were all very local and indigenous.
 Laterite and stone were widely used along with wood,
metal and tiles of different patterns and varied styles.
 Ornamentation was a focal point and evolved greatly.
