Where is the axis of symmetry?
y  6  2( x  1) 2
How do you find the x-intercepts?

y  6  2( x  1) 2

y  1  2( x  1) 2
How do you find the y-intercepts?
y  6  2( x  1) 2
Completed Square Form of a Quadratic Equation
y  a  x  h  k
2

Vertex = (h, k)
Axis of symmetry equation is x = h

To find intercepts:
x-intercepts set y = 0 and solve
y-intercepts set x = 0 and solve
Three-Step Method to Graphing
Parabola
0) Make sure it is in “completed square” form: y-k
= a(x-h)2
1) Plot the vertex and determine whether it opens
up or down. Find the axis of symmetry.
2) Find the x-intercept(s). If they exist, and it is
convenient, plot them If not, plot some points
close to the vertex. (Use symmetry)
3) Connect the points with a smooth curve.
Graph y-5=-(x+2) 2
Graph y-3=3(x-1)2
Find an equation of the parabola having vertex (-1,-2)
and containing the point (2,-5).
Objectives: Graph a quadratic function and find its maximum or
minimum value, domain, range, and zeroes.

We know from the previous

section how to graph
y  2(x  3)2  1
Two forms of a quadratic function
1. Completed-square form y  a( x  h)2  k

y  ax 2  bx  c
2. General form
Ex.1 Change to Completed-square form and identify the
vertex, axis of symmetry, x and y intercepts, and
graph.
y  3x2  6x  1
Recall: If a > 0 the graph opens up  minimum
If a < 0 the graph opens down  maximum
Where does the max/min occur ?

y  a( x  h)2  k Vertex = (h, k)

y  ax 2  bx  c Vertex at x = -b/2a
Ex.2 Find the vertex of f(x) and the maximum or minimum
value.
1 2 7
f  x   x  3x 
2 4
Ex.3 Give the minimum or maximum value of each function.
Give the domain, range, and zeros.

f ( x )  2 x²  12 x
