What is Vegan Leather and why should we

have them in our closet

1
Why Vegan Leather?
More than a billion cows, pigs, goats, sheep, alligators, ostriches, kangaroos,
and even dogs and cats are cruelly slaughtered for their skins every year.
Many of these animals have their tails and horns cut off without painkillers,
and some are even skinned and cut apart while still conscious. Vegan
leather offers a killer look without any killing.
It’s time to make the switch necessary to stop the animal cruelty and of
course, to protect the nature itself too.
Not only does vegan leather make you look good, it also makes
you feel good because it’s cruelty-free.

What Exactly is Vegan Leather

So what exactly is vegan leather? And why should we have that instead of
real leather?

Most vegan leather is made of polyurethane, a polymer that can be made to

order for any designer’s whim. It can sparkle, have a nice glossy sheen, or
be saturated in all kinds of shades that put real leather to shame.

Eco-Friendly Vegan Leather

Up until recently, pretty much all vegan leather was made of plastic-
based materials.
But over the past few years, innovators have discovered many ways
to make vegan leather out of everything from pineapples to cactus
leaves to flowers.
The vegan leather industry has come so far from the days of good old
pleather.

leather is made from the sun-dried fibres of cactus plants in Mexican
state of the Zacatecas. It’s durable, smooth and water-resistant.
Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez have developed a
method of transforming cacti into a vegan leather that looks so
realistic, you'd never guess it was made from this desert plant.

Switching to Vegan Leather
Planet Earth loves vegan leather, too. Turning skin into leather takes loads of
energy and a toxic brew of chemicals—including mineral salts, coal-tar
derivatives, formaldehyde, oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based.
Tannery waste contains water-fouling salt, lime sludge, sulfides, acids, and other
pollutants.
