STRUCTURALISM
In 1879, a German philosopher-
physician, Wilhelm Wundt established
the first experimental laboratory to
study the basic elements or building
blocks of the mind.
Structuralism is the
study of the structure
of the mind.

Temporal Lobe- process feelings
Parietal Lobe - process visual
attention and spatial reasoning
Frontal Lobe- process thoughts
FUNCTIONALISM
Functionalists sought to explain the
mental processes in a more systematic and
accurate manner rather than focusing on the
elements of consciousness. Functionalists
focused on the purpose of consciousness
and behavior.

What is the main difference between Structuralism
and Functionalism?
 Structuralism focuses on what the mind ‘’is ’’
while Functionalism focuses on what the mind
‘’does’’.
 Structuralism looks inside the mind searching
for its structures while Functionalism looks at
human interactions and trying to understand
the purpose of thoughts.
BEHAVIORISM
Behaviorism is a type of Psychology and the theory
of learning. Everything we know about Behaviorism is
through observation and experimentation. It is not
concerned with our internal thoughts like thinking or
emotions. When we are born, our mind is a Tabularasa
meaning our mind is blank slate and ready to learn of
what surrounds us in our environment.
What is the aim of Behaviorism?
The main goal of
behaviorism is to be able to
predict and control behavior.
CLASSICAL CONDITIONING
Classical conditioning is a behaviorist theory of
learning. It posits that when a naturally occurring
stimulus and an environmental stimulus are repeatedly
paired, the environmental stimulus will eventually elicit a
similar response to the natural stimulus. The most famous
studies associated with classical conditioning are Russian
physiologist Ivan Pavlov’s experiments with dogs.
OPERANT CONDITIONING
Operant conditioning, sometimes referred to as
instrumental conditioning, is a method of learning
that employs rewards and punishments for
behavior. Through operant conditioning, an
association is made between a behavior and a
consequence (whether negative or positive) for that
behavior
