SCIENCE

Learning Objectives
● Define the terms related to the general
properties of matter in your own words.

● Find the volume of the given regularly

shaped solid.
● Differentiate physical property and
chemical property of matter
Essential Questions
● Why is your weight on the moon and on
earth different?
● Why does the Styrofoam float?
● Why do irons rust?
● How does the physical and chemical
property of matter differ from each other?
Physical Properties of Matter

Refers to the characteristics that you can

observe in an object without having to
change its composition.
States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas
Mass - is the
measure of the
amount of matter in
an object.

Weight - is the amount of force acting on the object

because of gravity.
Volume - is the
amount of space
that a material
occupies.
Length = 12 cm
Width = 5 cm
Height = 5 cm

V=l*w*h

12 cm * 5 cm * 5 cm = 300 cm3
Water = 20 mL
Water with rock = 32 mL
Get the volume of the rock.

32 mL - 20 mL = 12 mL

Thus, 12 mL is the
volume of the rock.
Density - is the
measure of how
solid an object is.
Chemical Properties of Matter

Refers to the observable chemical

composition of an object.
Flammability - the characteristic of an
object being turned into ashes.
Corrosion -
the damage on
a material
when exposed
to different
substances.
