Roll No. ---- 16501 Department ---- Computer Science And Engineering INTRODUCTION TO AUGMENTED REALITY Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it. HOW AUGMENTED REALITY WORKS • To know about working of augmented reality we first need to know about the three main components in any AR based system. • 1)---Hardware ---Key hardware components in AR-based devices are a processor, display, input devices and sensors. The display is either a monitor, handheld device, eyeglass or Head Mounted Displays (HMD). The input device is either the camera of a Smartphone or a webcam connected to the internet. Sensors are gyroscope or accelerometer of a mobile device or it could be an infrared sensor. • 2)---Software --- Software plays a key role in the functioning of any device based on Augmented reality technology. Virtual images, used for overlapping over the real live image, can be generated using 3D software. Also, to experience Augmented reality, end-user has to download a software application or browser plug-in. • 3)---Server ---Apart from this hardware and software, a web or cloud server plays an important role in storing the database of virtual images. Based on the request received from AR application, virtual images are retrieved from web or cloud server and sent to application. 1. PROJECTION BASED AR
As the name clearly says this type of AR projects digital
images on physical objects in the physical space. It can be interactive and project a digital keyboard on your desk, or a dialer on your hand. It might be non-interactive and it can be used to create projection of objects that you can position and see in depth – for example, it might show you if your future fridge will fit into that space you have near the oven by projecting the fridge in front of you. 2. RECOGNITION BASED AR
Whenever you scan a QR code, or scan an
image and it comes to live you are actually using a recognition based AR. Once it recognizes the marker, it replaces it with a corresponding object. Another type of recognition based AR tech is the one that translates words seen through the camera. This type of AR also seems to be the most widely used one – along with the next one. 3. LOCATION BASED AR Location based AR is taking advantage of the smart devices’ location detection features. If you’re a traveler and you want to discover new great places, this method will use your location by reading your smart device’s GPS, compass and accelerometer and give you relevant information about what you’re looking for on your screen. 4. OUTLINING AR
Outlining AR uses object recognition to
work, and might look a bit like a projection based AR. For example, whenever you’re parking your modern car in the dark, outlining AR recognizes the boundaries of the road and outlines them for you. This method can also be used in architecture and engineering to outline buildings and their supporting pillars. 5. SUPERIMPOSITION BASED AR 1.It is indeed one of the most important types of technology where object recognition plays an important role. In this technology, the augmented image can replace the original image, either partially or fully. Doctors can use the technology to examine the patient from various angles in real-time. A live feed from an X-ray machine can be used to superimpose the X-ray view of the patient‘s body part on the real image to provide a better understanding of the damage to bones. The application can be made to work via a head mounted display or special goggles. In other uses, the view can be shown on a screen where the video feed is taken from a real camera and X-ray vision can be imposed on it. In military applications, superimposition based AR can provide multiple views of a target object without showing extra information in text and blocking the vision of soldier from other important objects around. If you have been shooting enemies via your computer mouse, you’d already know how it would appear. Superimposition of infrared view or radioactive view of an object or an area can help save lives, or win wars! AUGMENTED REALITY IN EDUCATION Augmented reality in education will soon affect the conventional learning process. AR has the potential to change the location and timing of studying, to introduce new and additional ways and methods. Capabilities of Augmented Reality technology may make classes more engaging and information more apprehend able. The potential of combining smartphones and Augmented Reality for education is big, though it still has to be fully discovered. AR, in various ways, could grant students extra digital information about any subject, and make complex information easier to understand. Advantage of augmented reality in education are given as below. 1 Augmented Reality classroom. 2 Explain abstract and difficult concepts. 3 Engagement and interaction. 4 Discover and learn 5 Objects modelling AUGMENTED ASTRONOMY A virtual learning environment is made to present the 3d models of celestial bodies in our solar system. With this students can easily learn the relationship between the different celestial bodies present in our solar system. This method is more interactive as well as interesting. Students can easily visualise the solar system. Since gazing at the solar system with the help of telescope is more effective but due to the high cost of the telescopes it is nearly impossible to plant them in each and every institution. Implementation of AR environment is also costly but it might be a different option for learners. AUGMENTED CHEMISTRY The basic purpose of Augmented Chemistry is to help increase the understanding of 3-D chemistry modelling and spatial arrangement of molecular structures in space. With the help of advanced AR technology information about the surrounding real world becomes interactive and digitally tractable. AUGMENTED BIOLOGY AR can be used to study the anatomy and structure of the body in biology. The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) demonstrated that teachers could use AR technology to show what organs of human beings consist of and how they look by watching 3D computer-generated models in the real classrooms. Moreover, students may be able to study humans’ organs independently with their camera-embedded laptops and AR markers that connect PCs with AR information about biological structures of the human body MATHEMATICS AND GEOMETRY EDUCATION. With AR technology, teachers and students can collaborate by interacting with each other for some issues on shapes or arrangements. AR application, called Construct3D, specifically was designed for mathematics and geometry education with three- dimensional geometric construction models. For instance, using the AR application, teachers and students can intuitively explore properties of interesting curves, surfaces, and other geometric shapes. PHYSICS EDUCATION Physics is another area where AR can also be used to demonstrate various kinematics properties. With the help of AR we can dynamically present an object that varies in time, such as velocity and acceleration. The real and estimated experimental results can be visualized by using AR techniques that are more interesting than existing learning methods, and thus improve learning. Sometimes students have problems understanding the physical concepts of mechanics. It might be that physics in the traditional sense is sometimes taught in an abstract, jejune way and is therefore not very motivating for students. The result is that theoretical models behind physical phenomena are often misunderstood. It is not necessary to stress that conveying these concepts correctly is of utmost importance since they are fundamental to physics. Many theoretical models are based on Newton’s laws of motion. Therefore an AR based application was designed called as the Physics Playground that is supposed to support students in studying and finally understanding the concepts of mechanics .In this three-dimensional virtual environment learners and educators are able to freely create physical experiments that can be simulated in real time. MAGIC BOOK A book can become “magic” by adding AR technology. With the help of AR people, especially young children, can read books in more interactive and realistic ways by superimposing 3D rendered models onto books with AR technology. This is called “The Magic Book” which makes people’s fantasies about becoming a part of the story a reality by using both a normal book and a handheld see-through AR device. People can turn the pages of a book, look at pictures, and read the text without any interactive assistance. CONCLUSION The future of AR as a visualization technology looks bright, as shown by the interest generated in business and industrial circles as well as discussed in popular research papers in the education and training fields. Many questions still linger in terms of efficiency and when compared to traditional methods, particularly given the investments needed in research and design. However, there is much optimism of AR in education and training for the future. New technologies and information communications are not only powerful and compact enough to deliver AR experiences via personal computers and mobile devices but also well developed and sophisticated to combine real world with augmented information in interactively seamless ways. In conclusion, augmented reality (AR) has evolved from pipe dream (dreams of tech enthusiasts) to a substantial reality in just within a century. Until developers and UX designers begin to think about how AR can be integrated with daily life to improve the quality, efficiency, and productivity of experiences, then will we see the rapidity of the concept and its untoward effectiveness on a universal scale REFERENCES
