Centre Of Gravity

And Its Importance In Arts & Sports

By Aameena Nada
What is Centre Of Gravity?
Centre of Gravity is a hypothetical
point in a body where all the weight of
the body is thought to be concentrated
in. In a uniform gravitational field, the
centre of gravity is identical to the
centre of mass though they do not
coincide.

It is important to know the COG of a body as

it can help predict it's behaviour when acted
on by gravity
Importance of it in Arts & Sports
The centre of gravity affects the stability of objects. It is
the point of rest or point of balance of an object or
system. It is the position from where the weight of the
object or system may act.

Performance artists make use of the center of gravity to

maintain excellent balance, stability, and flexibility. The
concept is also applied in other art work.

Lowering the centre of gravity increases balance and

stability in sports. This is why you can change direction
faster by bending your legs and getting lower to the
ground. It increases your stability, allowing you to adjust
to greater force production by the legs.
