PERSONAL HYGIENE & GROOMING

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session the staff will learn:

 The importance of Personal Hygiene and Grooming

Hotel Grooming Standards


WHAT IS PERSONAL HYGIENE?

Shower daily Brush teeth at least twice a day Wash hair regularly

Wash hands frequently Shave Daily Use deodorant after shower


WHY IS PERSONAL HYGIENE IMPORTANT?

To kill bad bacteria (Germs)

To avoid bad breath and body odor

To maintain good health and prevent from sickness


FOOD HANDLERS

• Must be properly clothed in clean clothing

• Keep hands, finger nails and body clean

• Wash hands thoroughly before commencing work, after using the toilet and
at other times

• Wear water proof dressing over wounds

• Do not smoke while involved in food handling

• Ensure food is protected from pest and dirt.


WASH HANDS

• After visiting the toilet


• After blowing the nose if you are involved in food preparation or handling of
unprotected food
• After touching the nose or face
• After handling the garbage or spoiled foods
• Before and after handling raw product such as meat, poultry and vegetables
• Before and after handling or preparing the food (to prevent cross
contamination)
• After handling money
• After tea and meal break
WHAT IS GROOMING?

• Grooming is the method of making yourself


look good and clean. The things you do to
make yourself tidy and pleasant. Our looks
are a sign of who we are. Our grooming
should build a professional workplace
picture, and we must be attentive to our
appearance
• Grooming is a blend of style and discipline.
It is to project to our esteemed costumers
an image of the culture and ethics of the
organization that is our guests

Hair
1. Hair should be neat and clean, well styled and should appear
professional
2. Hair should be trimmed regularly, neatly combed and in place
always
3. Hair longer than shoulder length should be cut straight evenly
and must be tied/ bundled in a pony tail or plait.
4. Long hair should be tied in a bun
5. Avoid excessive use of hairsprays and gels, as they can make
the hair look stiff and unnatural.
6. Do not use unnatural hair colors e.g. green, blue, unnatural blond etc

Make Up
1. Light cosmetics with colors that complement the uniform
and skin tones may be worn.
2. If make-up is worn it should be light and natural-looking.
3. Avoid vivid colors, like bright blues or violets around the
eyes, and make sure the blusher does not look too
dramatic.
4. Do not wear false eyelashes
5. Lipstick of a suitable color must be worn at all times.
6. Bright lipstick colors should be avoided.

Fingernails and accessories


1. Nails must be well maintained and clean.
2. Ensure nails are neatly trimmed, shaped and filed.
3. Excessively long nails are not allowed.
4. Use only clear or pail color of nail enamel.
5. Nail enamel should cover entire nail.
6. Maintain nail enamel properly, it should not be chipped
or unclean.
7. Only one ring and watch is permitted,
8. Small earrings for female staff.
9. Food handlers are prohibited of wearing rings.

Hair and Facial


1. Hair must be cut and tapered, so that it does not
touch beyond, or cover any parts of the ears.
2. Neatly combed, and not permed.
3. Hair should not touch the collar line of shirt.
4. Should be neatly styled and pulled back from the
face.
5. Non-oily appearance.
6. Avoid excessive use of hairsprays and gels, as they
can make the hair look stiff and unnatural.
7. Use of hair colour, bleached hair not permitted
8. Every day shaving needs to be done.
9. Beards and mustaches are forbidden .

Fingernails and accessories


1. Fingernails must be clean and presentable all times.
2. Nails should be trimmed, filed and well maintained.
3. Clean and dirt free.
4. No nicotine, carbon or ink stains on the fingers.
5. Only one simple ring on each hand is permitted.
6. Wearing rings is prohibited for food handler.
7. Earrings for men are unacceptable.
8. No chains, bracelets or bands (Excepts for Religious
Reasons).
9. Watches should be conservative and not flashy or too large.
HOTEL GROOMING STANDARD- UNIFORM

1. Change your uniform regularly at Housekeeping Linen


Room.
2. Clean pressed uniforms must be worn.
3. Contact Housekeeping Uniform Linen Room if buttons
are missing.
4. Contact Department Head if your name badge is damaged
or lost.
5. The Belt is essential. It should be plain black or brown in
colour with matte finish
Check appearance in a mirror in the locker rooms before
going on duty.
HOTEL GROOMING STANDARD- SHOES

1. Ensure that shoes are clean and polished


before going on duty
2. Only black oxford shoes are permitted.
3. Shoes must be well maintained and in good
condition.
4. Socks to match the colour of the shoes or
trousers.
5. Females must wear appropriate stockings
with black court shoes where heels do not
exceed two inches.
