• We should be alert when we walk, eat and
work. Sometimes we may fall while playing
games. We can be wounded. We can get an
accident at any time, so we have to apply
certain types of measures.

taken to improve safety, i.e. reduce risk
related to human health.

• We all observe that when individuals fall ill or are
injured, they are taken to hospitals for treatment.
But it takes time to reach them, during which if
some initial care is taken, it helps treatment of such
individuals and in many cases saves their lives.
• First aid is the initial care for an illness or injury. It is
usually performed by a non-expert person to a sick
or injured person until appropriate medical
treatment can be accessed in a hospital or by going
to a doctor.

and our house. In the box we can keep some
items like

Why First Aid ?
• The main objective of first aid is not to
cure, but to ensure safety until the patient
or affected person accesses specialised
treatment.
• The basic objectives of First Aid are:
• to give immediate care.
• to protect the casualty from further harm.
• to relieve pain.
• to promote recovery.
Wound
• We may get wound while working with sharp
objects. Sometimes we may fall and get
wounded.
• We should not be afraid but follow the given
instructions.
 Lay the patient in comfortable place.
 Wash the wound with sterilized water.
 Use cotton to put antiseptic liquid & bandage

 Do not try to take out the larger foreign particles
from the wound by yourself.
 Take the patient to the hospital.
Burn
• Burn may be caused by fire or
accidental touching of hot
substances.
• In case your finger gets burn put it
under cool running water and allow
it to cool down slowly.

contaminate further.
• If burn is severe take the patient to
hospital.
Drowning
• During flood, while crossing rivers and learning swimming, any
of our friends can be drowned.
• Sinking and drinking a lot of water is called drowning. If not
treated immediately the person may die.

Animal bite
• Some animals like dog, monkey, rat can
contain rabies virus in their saliva. When they
bite they transmit virus to us.
• It severely damages our nervous system. To
prevent such infection, following first aid
treatment can be applied.
 Wound should be continuously washed with
soap and water.
 Gently tie above the wound with handkerchief.
 Antiseptic liquid can be used with cotton.
 We have to identify either the animal is rabid
or not.
 Ain case it is rabid the person should be given
anti rabies vaccination.

electric source and body. We should always be careful
while working with electric wire.
