ENGINE FAILURE IN THE

CIRCUIT
OBJECTIVE
• To maintain control, maximise performance and land
safely in the event of an engine failure during take-
off, or landing
CONSIDERATIONS
ENGINE FAILURE ON TAKEOFF
50% loss of power
80% decrease in performance
30% increase in drag

CONTROLLABILITY

High Power
Low airspeed Easier recognition, difficult controllability
Increased drag
PRINCIPLES
POWER VS DRAG AFTER T/O

Power
POWER Required
Power
Available

85 AIRSPEED
PRINCIPLES
TAKEOFF SAFETY SPEED (Vtoss)
The greater of 1.05Vmca or 1.2Vs. AFM Vtos 80Kts.
We use blue line (85kts) for increased performance margin

SINGLE ENGINE PERFORMANCE

At Vyse (85Kts), with gear and flap up, inoperative engine
feathered, takeoff power set, cowl flaps open. At S.L.,
MCTOW and ISA conditions.

210’/min ROC = 148’/nm = 2% gradient

Consider obstacles
PRINCIPLES
SINGLE ENGINE TURNING
Angle of bank increases Vs & decreases performance
If possible turn towards live engine to avoid over banking

TAKE-OFF BRIEFING

To be done prior to every take off

Discuss engine failure prior to and after blue line.
Consider OCA, circuit direction and options
ENGINE HANDLING / AIRCRAFT
MANAGEMENT

• Instructor will fail and restore power

• Instructor handles dead engine
• Zero thrust instead of feathering
HUMAN FACTORS/AIRMANSHIP

• Lookout
• Learn systems and drills
• Advise ATC/Traffic
• Keep current
AIR EXERCISE
ENGINE FAILURE PRIOR TO LIFT OFF

Close both throttles

Maintain direction
Brake as required

ENGINE FAILURE AIRBORNE BELOW BLUE LINE

Close both throttles

Land ahead
Brake as required

If an overrun is likely, shut down: mixture ICO, mags & masters

off
AIR EXERCISE
ENGINE FAILURE AIRBORNE ABOVE BLUE LINE

Maintain control Keep straight

Maintain blue line

Maximise performance Mixtures

Pitches
Powers

Minimise drag Gear up

Flap up
Identify (dead leg, dead engine)
Verify (smoothly close throttle)
Feather
AIR EXERCISE
ENGINE FAILURE AFTER AIRBORNE ABOVE BLUE LINE

Expect height loss while doing drills

Establish positive ROC at blue line
Assess performance & options Re-circuit?
Continue to climb?
Forced landing?

Maintain control !!!

AIR EXERCISE
ENGINE FAILURE ON BASE OR FINALS

Maintain control, maximise performance, minimise drag

Assess performance, power as required
Gear first, then flap
Do not lower full flap until you are SURE of a landing

ASYMMETRIC OVERSHOOT - DA
Full power, keep straight
Gear up, flap up
BLUE LINE!!
AIR EXERCISE
ENGINE FAILURE BELOW D.A

Maintain control, identify & feather if possible

Maintain speed & continue approach
