Purpose of Coagulation and Flocculation
• The primary purpose of the coagulation/flocculation process
is the removal of turbidity from the water
• Turbidity is a cloudy appearance of water caused by small
particles suspended therein Water with little or no turbidity
will be clear
Figure ; Neutrally charged particles attract due to van der Waal's forces.
Principle of coagulation Cont’d…
• Once the particles in water are not repelling each
other, van der Waal's forces make the particles drift
toward each other and join together into a group.
When enough particles have joined together, they
become floc and will settle out of the water

• The design criteria of a horizontal continuous
flow rectangular basin flocculator:
Example: Design of a mechanical rapid mix tank
1. Design a mechanical rapid mix tank used for
treating 75700 m3/d of groundwater that has a
temperature of 10oC. The items you need to
determine are:
1) Tank volume
2) Tank dimensions and
3) Power consumption
Use a detention time of 2 minutes, velocity
gradient of 850/sec and cubic tank geometry
Example Solution
1. Tank volume
V = Q x td = 75700 x 2/(24*60) = 105 m3
2. Tank dimensions
Assuming a cubic tank, tank dimensions become
4.7 m depth x 4.7 m width x 4.7 m length
3. Power consumption of the rapid mixer
At 10oC the dynamic viscosity of water = 1307
Pa.s
= 99 KW
