The rationale / science behind the Lingkod
Bayan multisectoral social movement building
• Travis Hirschi (1935-2017)
• American Sociologist and Criminologist
• Prof of Sociology from the Univ of Arizona

• He helped developed the modern version of

the social control theory of crime and the
social bond theory that affects deviance.
What is social control? Why is it
important in law enforcement?

The goal is to conform to strengthening

the social bonds – and not to weaken it.
Social control
• The norms, rules, laws, and structures of society regulate
human behavior. It is a necessary part of social order, for
societies could not exist without controlling their populations.

• Set of rules and standards in society that keep individuals

bound to conventional standards as well as to the use of
formalized mechanisms.

• Ex. Government that uses laws and courts to exercise social

control.
The goal of social control is social order
e.g. government

e.g. culture

e.g. The law of supply and demand

What is the opposite of social order?

Who benefits from social order?
Question?
• Can you use social media to promote social control?

• Can you use social media to enable social order? Through

empowering advocacy groups and force multipliers?

• But how? Do you just facebook and youtube everything?

• I will argue that it takes thoughtful strategy to optimize the use of

social media for social movement building
Case study:
PNP social movement building through KKDAT
• Theory: Crime is more common among individuals
with weakened bonds to societal institutions
(Hirschi)
• Ergo, stronger bond with societal institutions such as
the police will lessen crime

• Crime can be prevented when people conform to

conventional values such as honesty, morality,
patriotism, obedience to the law, etc (Hirschi)

• For example, KKDAT promotes conventional values,

and enables stronger societal bonds with law
enforcement through his exposure with the police.
