and commodities are transferred from one place to another.

It helps to develop economy.

Transportation helps to achieve large scale of
production.
 MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION
The sources of transportation are called means of
transportation.
Means of transport carry passengers and their luggage
from one place to other place or from one country to
another.
Agricultural development ,industrial development ,social
welfare and political integration of a country largely
depend on the means of transportation.

 LAND TRANSPORT
 It is the transport or movement of people ,animals or
goods from one place to another location or land.
RAIL TRANSPORT:
 Rail transport is the mean of transport on vehicles which
run on tracks.
 It plays a crucial role for social and economic
development of a country.
 This mode of transport is very useful for bulky
commodities.
 Railway transport is cheaper than road transport.
 Railways are not affected by bad weather.
ROAD TRANSPORT:
• Road transport means transfer of
goods from one place to another.
• In our country where other means
of transport are not available, road
transport plays an important role.
• It provides door to door facility.
• The cost of road of transport is less
than other means of transport.
• The fare charges of road transport
are very reasonable.
RAIL - ROAD COORDINATION:
• Railway transport and road
transport are complementary to
each other.
• The rail - road coordination plays
an important role in transportation
of goods from one place to
another.
• These two means of transportation
should work in their own field and
cooperate each other.
 WATER TRANSPORT
 Water transport is the cheapest means
of transportation.
 Boats, steamers , ships etc. on rivers,
canals and on oceans are used in this
type of transport.
 There are two types of water transport;
inland water transport and ocean water
transport.
 INLAND WATER TRANSPORT:
 Despite modern technologies advances in air and
ground transportation, inland waterways continue fill a
vital role and in many areas, to grow substantially.
 Transport by inland waterways maybe by navigable
rivers or those made navigable by canalization or an
artificial water ways called canals.
 Many inland waterways are multi purposed, providing
drainage, irrigation, water supply and generation of
hydro-electric power as well as navigation.
OCEAN WATER TRANSPORT:

Foreign trade is almost done by sea transport.

It is every time consuming means of transport.
It is one of the cheapest transport as sea does
not need any maintenance and only a small
amount of power is needed to steer the ship.
 AIR TRANSPORT
The mobility of men and material by air is called as
air transport.

ADVANTAGES:
 It is a fast speed means of transport.
 An airway has great strategic importance.
 Air transport provides quick transport services.
 They are most suitable for carrying light goods of high
value.
 Airways play an important role during natural
calamities.
DISADVANTAGES:
Air transport is prone to accidents.
It’s operational cost is too high.
The aircrafts have small carrying capacity.
Airways are unreliable as they depends upon
weather.
Air transport requires huge investment for
construction and maintenance.
CHOICE OF A SUITABLE MODE OF
TRANSPORT
Selecting an appropriate mode of transport is a difficult process.
Following points should be kept in mind while selecting the
mode of transport:
In hilly areas businessman has to depend on road transport.
If the person wants to send coal,iron or raw materials, he will
consider the railway transport.
If the commodities are to be sent to island or in another
country, water transport or air transport will be considered.
CONCLUSION:
From the above points it can be said that
selecting the suitable mode of transport is very
important. If the mode of transport is wrongly selected
there will be either high cost of transportation or the
goods will be destroyed in transit. Therefore, every
businessmen should consider the various elements
before selecting mode of transport.
