Stories have been a part of human culture and society for thousands of years.
Whenever you’re telling somebody about a series of events, you
are telling a story.
It does not matter what is the subject of the story or what is the
time of the story.
A story is a means of transferring information,
experience, attitude or point of view.

Every story has a teller and a listener.

The Five Essential Elements
of a Story
● Characters
● Setting
● Plot
● Conflict/Problem
● Resolution/Solution
Characters
The characters are the individuals in the story.

Characters can be person, animals, things etc.

Authors provide physical description and personality traits of characters in such a way that
authors can visualize the person.

The main character or leading character is called protagonist.

The character who is against the leading character is called antagonist.

Do characters change ? When do we introduce characters?

Setting
Setting is the time and place (or when and where) of the story.

Setting is introduced at the beginning of the story.

The setting includes the environment of the story, which can be made up of the
physical location, climate, weather, social and cultural surroundings.

The setting of a story can change throughout the plot.

Setting gives context to the characters’ actions in a story line.

Through setting we can understand the justification of characters’ action.

Plot
Plot is the events in a story.

Plot is the main part of a story.

These events in a story relate to each other in a pattern or a sequence.

Plots should have clear beginning, middle and end.

Plots should have necessary description and suspense so that readers can make sense of
actions and follow along from beginning to end.
Conflict/Problem
Every story has a conflict to solve.

Plot is centered around conflict.

Characters attempt to resolve conflict/problem.

Conflicts keep readers engaged and without conflicts stories become boring.

Conflicts can be internal or external .

When the story’s action become more exciting before resolution, it is called climax. It is
highest point of tension in a story.
Resolution/Solution
Resolution is the conclusion of the story’s plot.

The resolution is when conflicts are resolved and the story concludes.

In resolution ,  any unanswered questions are answered.

Stories with complete endings have strong resolution.
