EPIDEMIOLOGY AND SURVEILLANCE
Terms:
• Person Under Investigation (PUI) –a person who is
symptomatic and has a history of travel to China
for the past 14 days from the onset of the
symptoms and/or has a history of exposure
• Person Under Monitoring (PUM) – a person who
has a history of travel to China and/or a history of
exposure but does not manifest symptoms
Terms:
• Close Contact - being within approximately 6 feet (2
meters), or within the room or care area, of a 2019-
nCoV case for a prolonged period of time while not
wearing recommended personal protective
equipment or PPE; close contact can include caring
for, living with, visiting, or sharing a health care
waiting area or room with a 2019-nCoV case
– or –
Terms:
• having direct contact with infectious
secretions of a 2019-nCoV case (e.g., being
coughed on) while not wearing
recommended personal protective
equipment.

REGISTRATION
• Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) Form
– Important initial information about the case should be completed.
Among these were:
 Complete DRU details
 Complete patient information (name, age, sex, complete address)
 Important dates (travel history, date of arrival, onset of illness,
admission)
 Patient Diagnosis/ Condition
 Name and contact number of the DSC
REPORTING
• The DSC/HOSPITAL POINT PERSON shall
forward the accomplished SARI
investigation form to the next higher
level SIMULTANEOUSLY.
CONFIRMATION
• Laboratory Specimen (NPS/OPS) will be sent
to Research Institute for Tropical Medicine
for confirmation of 2019 nCoV ARD
ANALYSIS AND FEEDBACK
• Detect case clusters of nCoV infection and any
evidence of amplified or sustained human-to-
human transmission.
• Identification of confirmed case
• Need for contact tracing
Information should be reported routinely from the lower to
higher levels of health care system and vise versa
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF
RESU
• Assess reported cases immediately based on the 2019 nCoV
Decision Tool
• Report all Person Under Investigation (PUIs) through Event-
based Surveillance and Response (ESR) to Epidemiology
Bureau
• Provide on-site assistance (e.g. technical, logistics and
specimen collection) to referral facilities as requested
• Constantly coordinates with hospital and/or referral
facilities for the status of the PUI
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF
RESU
• Facilitate sending of Nasopharyngeal swab and
Oropharyngeal swab specimen to RITM
• Facilitate dissemination of nCoV laboratory results to
concerned authorities
• Provide technical and logistical assistance to Local
Epidemiology and Surveillance Units for Persons Under
Monitoring (PUM) in the community.
• Provide technical assistance to Local ESU in the conduct of
contact tracing once a confirmed nCoV is reported
