Bioethanol is a derived term
of ethanol. derived from ethane
replacing one hydrogen atom
Ethanol produced, by fermentation with a hydroxyl group: ch3-ch2-

of crops, for use as a biofuel.
From sugarcane

• Bioethanol production from sugarcane involve various steps

• HARVESTING and crushed the sugarcane
• EXTRACTION OF SUCROSE
• CLARIFICATION
• FERMENTATION
• DISTILLATION
• DEHYDRATION
HARVESTING

• The first step is sugarcane harvesting. (Collection of crops)

• Much of the harvesting is done with manual labor.
• Some harvesting is done mechanically
CUTTING or CRUSHING

• The cane is then cut and milled with water.

• Cutting or crushing will produce
• 1)Sugar juice 2)Bagasse

• waste product produce heat
BAGASSE

• Fibrous matter
• That remains after sugarcane stalked are crushed to extract their
juice.
• PRODUCTION
• Each 10 tons of sugarcane =3 tonnes of wet bagasse
EXTRACTION OF SUCROSE

• crushing produces a juice with 10-15% solids from which the

sucrose is extracted.
• Now we have sucrose molasses which is also called syrup
 Clarification step

• The juice is heated to 115°C and treated with lime and sulfuric
acid, which kills unwanted inorganics or bacteria
Fermentation step

• Fermentation is done in fermentation chamber

• We add sucrose in camber and locked
• It will ferment and CO2 will be produced
• The fermentation is exothermic
•  therefore, cooling is needed to keep the reaction under fermentation
conditions.
• Now yeast(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is added which breakdown the sugar in
to ethanol
• This enzyme is used to ferment the sucrose in to ethanol and this process will
take some time might be two days
• We get 10-14% ethanol rest 86-90% will be the water
Distillation

• Distillation helps to purify it will helps to remove the water

• It convert the 10-14% ethanol in to 97% ethanol means only 3%
water left
Dehydration
• Dehydration remove all the water and gives 100% ethanol
