When is a longitudinal study

beneficial over cross-sectional

studies?
• If the research consist of observations
of the subjects or the variables over a
long period of time in order to establish
conclusions then longitudinal study is
preferred.
• They are effective in defining variable
patterns over time. It would be possible
for researchers to learn more about
cause-and-effect relationships and make
connections in a clearer manner. More
data over longer periods of time will
allow for more concise and better
results.
• Longitudinal study is preferred when the
research is flexible in the sense that the
focus or the objective of the study can
be modified while collecting data.
Discuss a study idea where you feel longitudinal study might
be more useful than a cross-sectional study. Give reasons to
justify.

• Research Problem:
Age as a Factor Influencing the mathematical or quantitative ability of
the people.
Longitudinal study would be preferred because the sample size can be
studied as they age over a period of time and there would be less
variability and would give us more concise results.
If we use cross sectional then we had to take population size of
different age group and analyze then at the same time due to which the
results might vary due to inconsistent sample size.
