UP CHAPEL

- National Historical Landmark/Cultural Treasure

- The first structure/ building in the Philippines
with a circular thin-shelled roof, thus called “the
spaceship that landed at the UP”
- Was finished in December, 1995

- An Irish who became an
American citizen and was
assigned in the Philippines.
- He was the inspiration of UP
Chapel.
- He was the guiding star of
UPSCA (University of the
Philippines Students Catholic
Action)

VIDAL TAN
-UP President until the year of
1940’s and the head of
Protestants during that time.
-allocated locations for the two
chapel (Catholic and Protestant)
set apart by Laurel Avenue.

-National Artist for
Architecture (1990)
-design the UP Chapel
 The altar is at the center,
closer to the congregation
unlike in traditional
designs where people at
the back bench get farther
views of the altar, the
celebrant, and the mass
being officiated.

welcoming faith
NAPOLEON ABUEVA
-National Artist for Sculpture (1976)
-Made the wooden sculpture of the cross back-
to-back (Crucified Christ; Resurrected Christ) –
hanging from the center of thin-shelled roof.
-Made the altar in marble
ARTURO LUZ
- National Artist for Visual Arts
- A young artist who contributed his
“River of Life” art design on the
Christ floor at the UP Chapel.

“River of Life” – everything comes from

the altar/faith/Christ.
 VICENTE MANANSALA
- National Artist for Painting (1981)
- Father of Philippine Modern Art
- Made the mural interpretation of the
Stations of the Cross on the walls of the
UP Chapel.

ANG KIU KOK

-National Artist for Visual Art
-He assisted Manansala in creating
the mural of the Stations of the Cross
on the walls of the Chapel
