during cyclone

Effects of cyclone on human life

•Loss of human lives

•Destruction of houses
•Loss of domestic animals
•Day to day facilities are hampered
•Loss of uncountable trees
•Destruction of crops on the agricultural land
•Disturbance of the surrounding ecosystem Image source: Hindustan Times

•Stress on mental health of the affected

Struggles of fishermen during cyclone
•Often they face sudden cyclone in the middle of the sea
•They lack proper weather forecast
•They sails to deep sea with their life risk
•When they see a sudden cyclone coming they can barely contact the people on the land
•This puts their survival at risk

Objective of the proposed solution

•Reaching out to almost every fisherman to make them aware of weather forecast
•Providing them VHF devices to contact to authorities on the land
•Ensuring seamless contact with people on land
•Getting location of each ship/boat in the sea
•Sending rescue team at the earliest
•Saving as many life as possible

Proposed technical Solution

1.Making them aware of upcoming storms:

If they can be informed prior to any storm and stopped from going into the ocean, there is
No need for any further rescue plan.

• Collect phone number of the fishermen.

• Make a database of the phone numbers along with their name.
• Authority should inform them about any upcoming storm by SMS and call.
• Displays near coastal area should show the weather forecast.

2. 3-tier communication system:

•Tier-1 is nearer to the coastal area where mobile networks are available and communication can be
established easily.
•Tier-2 is where mobile communication is not available but VHF towers can communicate using VHF
devices.
•Tier-3 is where both mobile network and VHF communication is not available.
Proposed solution for reliable communication:

•Making sure their mobile phones are in working condition

•People who are going beyond the mobile network coverage area, providing them with VHF
devices (at least one VHF device per boat or ship)
•Making them aware of the range till where the VHF will work
•People going into the deep sea should be provided with satellite phone. ( Due to high cost
it can be limited to one per a group of people who will be going into the deep sea)

Proposed solution for better tracking :

• In case of any unpleasant event we should be able to track them before sending any rescue unit
•Each boat/ship should be equipped with high accuracy gps devices to track them down.
