DISTURBANCES
WATER
REVIEW
Identify the ca uses of s oil erosion in the following situations .

1. The soil from the hill eroded to the rice fields due to flashflood.
2. Miners dig the mountain to look for precious stones and other wealth deposited in it.
HUMAN ACTIVITIES
3. During the sand storm in the desert, the sand dunes change its formation.
WIND
4.Energy that pulls everything down including the soil in higher places.
GRAVITY
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify and describe different weather
disturbances

2. Demonstrate the movement of a cyclone

through a simple experiment.

3. Enumerate importance of having

precautionary measures in times of weather
disturbances.

DISTURBANCES
What have you observed
in the video clip?
Have you experienced a
typhoon before?
What do you feel?
Was your family prepared
before the typhoon came?
The Philippines
experiences an average of
20 typhoons a year and
the biggest contributor of
the weather disturbances
in our country is the
Pacific Ocean that lies on
the Eastern part of our
country.
WEATHER FACTORS THAT
AFFECT WEATHER

- is the condition of the Temperature

Air Pressure
atmosphere at a short Humidity
period of time Clouds
Precipitation
Wind Speed
Wind Direction

Once this factors change and affects the weather

condition of the atmosphere
WEATHER DISTURBANCES occur
WEATHER DISTURBANCES
This refer to any disruption of the atmospheres stable
condition. It can manifest through formation of low pressure
area or different prevailing winds like monsoon and the
Intertropical Convergent Zone (ITCZ)
Low Pressure Area (LPA) and High
Pressure Area (HPA)
High Pressure Area (HPA) is when
cold air sinks or pressing down,
because of this air on the surface
becomes dry.

Low Pressure Area (LPA) is when

air rises, less air presses downward,
resulting to the formation of LPA.
CYCLONES

In cyclone the cool air flows to

take the place of the rising
warm air because of this the air
guard spins. The wind spires
around the center of the
cyclone and it is called the eye.
Demonstrating the movement of a cyclone
Simple Experiment
Materials Needed:

1. 2 empty plastic bottles (1.5 liters)

2. 1 liter of water
3. duct tape, electric tape
4. food color (optional)

Experiment Procedures:

1. Fill in the 1 plastic bottle with 1.2 liter of water, leave the other plastic bottle empty.
2. Add the food color into the water (optional).
3. Connect the finish or the mouth of both bottles with the duct or electric tape.
4. Flip the bottles upside down (bottle filled with water on top) and immediately swirl it as fast as you
can.
5. Witness the water as it forms like a mini cyclone as it goes down to the other bottle.
TROPICAL CYCLONES
When a cyclone is form over the
tropics it is now called Tropical
Cyclone.

Tropical Cyclones that occur

within the Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR) can be
develop in two areas namely:

Pacific Ocean
West Philippine Sea
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration
(PAGASA)

The agency that keeps track

of the cyclones that enter the
PAR. They are the one
responsible in informing us
about a weather disturbances
that might struct our country.
CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONE

1. TROPICAL DEPRESSION

- It is a weak low pressure

disturbance with a definite
surface circulation. It has a
maximum wind speed of up to 61
kph. It is common in the
equatorial region or the
Intertropical Convergence Zone
(ITCZ).
CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONE

2. TROPICAL STORM

- It is a moderate tropical
cyclone with maximum wind
speed of 62 – 88 kph. It is more
organized and more circular in
shape. The rotation of tropical
storm is more recognizable than
that of a tropical depression.
CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONE

3. TYPHOON

- It is an intense weather
disturbance with an average size
of about 500 kilometer diameter.
It has a maximum wind blows
near the center that has a speed
of 119 - 200 kph.
CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONE

4. SUPER TYPHOON

- A tropical cyclone where a

maximum wind blows near the
center that has a speed of greater
that 200 kph.
Other Weather Disturbances in the Philippines

MONSOON

- A continuous change in the

direction of the prevailing
winds blowing at a particular
direction. If we have monsoon
we experience heavy rain.
Other Weather Disturbances in the Philippines

NORTHEAST MONSOON OR HANGING AMINAHAN

- Is a seasonal wind that blows from November to

February. It gives us cold temperatures during
the year. That is why during Christmas we’re
experiencing very cold weather.

SOUTHWEST MONSOON OR HANGING

HABAGAT

- The country experiences this seasonal wind from

May to October. It is a moist, warm and brings
large amount of rainfall to the Philippines. That is
why we’re experiencing heavy rain during the
months of May & June.
Precautionary Measures Before, During and After a
Typhoon.

BEFORE A TYPHOON

1. Prepare enough food to last for 3 days.

2. Listen to radio or tv updates on the coming typhoon
3. Prepare flashlights and extra batteries in case of
power interruption.
4. Prepare an emergency kit.
5. Check your electric posts to prevent accidents.
6. Cut all branches of trees around your house that
possibly fall on your house.
7. Pack a bag with clothes, batteries, flashlight, water,
canned goods and other necessities, incase you have to
evacuate.
Precautionary Measures Before, During and After a
Typhoon.

DURING A TYPHOON

1. Stay calm and be alert.

2. Stay indoors. Cancel any plans of travels.
3. Monitor the weather reports. Check what is
happening around you.
4. When local authorities advise you to evacuate, do so.
Precautionary Measures Before, During and After a
Typhoon.

AFTER A TYPHOON

1. Clean your house from any typhoon debris.

2. Check for any damages brought by the typhoon.
Repair if necessary.
3. Boil drinking water before drinking water.
4. Stay away from broken posts.
Read and understand each situation carefully. Choose the
letter of your answer.

What will you do in order to be updated with the weather

bulletin updates especially in times of typhoon?
A. stay at home
B. stay outdoor and play
C. watch the news updates
D. chat your friends and classmates
Philippines is prone to typhoon due its location. What
attitude should Filipino people possess in order to survive in
every storm they will face?
A. Filipinos must be resilient
B. Filipinos should be dependent on the government.
C. Filipinos should point to one another whose fault it is.
D. Filipinos should migrate to countries that are not
vulnerable to typhoon.
How are you going to protect your family from potential
harm when a typhoon is about to hit your place?

A. Attend party with your neighbors.

B. Go outside and look for a friend to hang with.
C. Charge your phone so could play when electricity is out.
D. Do the precautionary measures before, during and after
the typhoon and do not forget to pray to ask God for
protection and guidance.
