Introduction

• Average is nothing but EVEN SPLIT.

• And it is a number expressing the central

value in a set of data, which is calculated by
dividing the sum of the values in the set by
their number.
Concept
Say, 3 kids are there and their weights are 20, 25 and 45 kg
respectively. Then what is their average?

 20+25+45 𝑘𝑔𝑠  =
= 30 kgs
3 𝑝𝑝𝑙

So the average weight of 3 ppl is 30 kgs

Example
The average age of 5 people is 44 years. A 6th person joins the
group and the average age of the new group increases by 5 years
over the previous one, what is the age of the 6th person who joined
the group?

5 years 30 Yrs
5 Yrs

? Yrs (5 x 44) + X
44 years 44 Yrs 74 Yrs = 49
6
5 ppl 220 + X = 294
X = 294 - 220
X = 74
Avg weight = 44 Years 5 Yrs X 6 pp = 30 Years
5 years
49 Years
Example
The average age of a class of 39 students is 15 years. If the age of the
teacher be included, then the average increases by 3 months. Find the age
of the teacher.

3 Months 310Mon
Yrs

? Yrs (39 x 15) + X

15 years 15 Yrs 25 Yrs = 15.25
40
39 ppl 585 + X = 610
X = 610 - 585
X = 25
3 Mon X 40 ppl = 120
Avg age = 15 Years
Months
3 months
= 10 Years
15 y 3 mon
Example
The average weight of 10 men in a team is increased by 2.3 kg when
one of the team, who weighs 41 kg is replaced by a new man. Find
the weight of the New man.

Example
In an exam the average score obtained by the students who took
the exam was found. A recheck of the marks confirmed that the
average found earlier was 5 less than the actual average as two
marks 370 and 650 was taken as 280 and 590 respectively. How
many students took the exam?

The original marks 370 650

The mistaken marks 280 590

90 + 60

This 150 marks is extra, which will be divided

150 between everyone, and each got 5 marks

150
  = 30
5 So, 30 students should be there
Example
The average age of 25 people is 49 years. Two people aged 41
and 45 leave the group and is replaced by another 3 people, and
the average age of the group still remains the same. What is the
average age of the 3 people who joined?

(25 x 49) - 41 -45 + X = 26 x 49

1225 - 86 + X = 1274
1139 + X = 1274
X = 135

So, weight of these 3 ppl is 135 kg

Then their average weight is 135/3 = 45

Example
The average of four consecutive even numbers is 63. Find the
product of the largest and smallest of these numbers?

( X +( X+2) + ( X + 4 ) + ( X + 6 ) ) / 4 = 63

X + X+2 + X+4 + X+6 = 252

4 X + 12 = 252
4 X = 240
X = 60
So, the least number is 60
Then the largest number will be 66

Then their product is 60 X 66 = 3960

Example
The average of 11 numbers is 11. The average of the first 6
numbers is 10 and last 6 numbers is 13. What is the 6th number?

The sum of 11 numbers is

11 X 11 = 121

The sum of first 6 numbers is

10 X 6 = 60 So the sum of first 6 and last 6
numbers is
The sum of last 6 numbers is 60 + 78 = 138
13 X 6 = 78

The 6th numbers is

138 – 121 = 17
Example
A man travels from A to B at 40 km/h and returns back to A at 60
km/h. Then what is his average speed?

A 120 km 240 km B

40 km/h 60 km/h

3 hrs 6 hrs  2 𝑎𝑏
2 hrs 4 hrs 𝑎+𝑏
5 hrs 10 hrs  =

In 5 hrs he travelled In 10 hrs he travelled

up and down 240 km up and down 480 km   4800
 240  480 ¿
So, avg speed = 5 So, avg speed = 10 100
¿  48 𝑘𝑚/ h ¿  48 𝑘𝑚/ h ¿ 4 8 𝑘𝑚/h

Example
If a person covers 3 equal distances at the speed of 30 km/h,
15 km/h and 10 km/h respectively. Then find out his average speed
during the whole journey.
60 km 60 km 60 km

30 km/h 15 km/h 10 km/h

2 hrs
180 km
4 hrs So, avg speed = = 15 km/h
12 hrs
6 hrs
12 hrs
Example
A person covers 20 km with speed of 5 km/h then he covers next 15
km with speed of 3 km/h and last 10 km is covered at 2 km/h. Find
out his average speed for the whole journey?
20 km 15 km 10 km

5 km/h 3 km/h 2 km/h

4 hrs 45 km
So, avg speed =  = km/h
5 hrs 14 hrs
