THE PROBLEM
Introduction

Agriculture plays a very important role in the

economy of many countries that mainly
provides the main source of food, income and
employment to a huge percentage of rural
populations. It is at the heart of the daily life,
vital to the economy and society which serves
as the backbone of the economic system.
In the Philippines, the Agricultural sector
is important for inclusive growth, being the
key driver of the economy in the rural areas
where most Filipinos live (but where poverty
incidence remains high). Poverty among
agricultural workers is mainly attributed to the
lack of enough attention to the agricultural
sector, but Agriculture remains a major source
of employment, with about 36% of the total
employed population working in the sector.
Statement of the Problem
Heavy rice harvester such as power tiller and tractor
for a small scale rice farming which rice is cultivated for
sale or home consumption only is impossible to be used
into farming because these equipments are expensive and
not economical. It is mostly observed that the use of
sickles are greatly employed in the harvesting of the rice
and this is known to be energy consuming due to the body
posture during the process of this activity, harvesting. In
addition, it is tiring to gather rice when using sickle on
field due to the abundance or huge amount of rice to be
harvested. This study hereby looks into more effective
method of harvesting rice on this scale of farming.
The goal of the study is to develop an
Innovated Motorized Hand Rice Harvester.
Specifically, this answers to the following
questions:

1. What is the possible Harvest Capacity

(velocity/min.) of the Machine?
2. What is the possible Fuel Consumption
(mL/min.) of the machine?
3. Is the machine more efficient than the
existing Rice Harvester?
Assumptions of the Study
The study was based on the following
Assumptions:

1. The Innovated Motorized Hand Rice Harvester is

more Efficient than the existing Hand Rice
Harvester

2. The Innovated Motorized Hand Rice Harvester is

Functional for small scale Farmers

3. The Study for the Innovated Motorized Hand Rice

Harvester is a Good contribution in the field of
Mechanical Engineering
Hypothesis

This Study is expecting to have a

significant difference in the functionality,
reliability and affordability of the
Innovated Motorized Hand Rice
Harvester compared to the
commercialized and existing one.

Significance of the study
The researchers believe that the Motorized Hand
Rice Harvester will be beneficial to the following:

1. Farmers.
2. Food Manufacturer Companies
3. Hand Rice Harvester Operator.
4. Mechanical Engineering Students.
5. Professor/ Instructor
6. Future Researchers
Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to research and review the

effort involved in the harvest of rice
traditionally the use of sickle with hand on a
rice farm in the Philippines. That is why this
study specifically aims to develop a simple rice
harvester which is fabricated from the
modification of a grass cutter so as to reduce
the work in rice harvesting and also to
promote farm mechanization.
Definition of Terms
The following terms, presented in alphabetical order, had
been deliberately used throughout the paper. This section
aims to give a reader a clearer understanding of the study
by means of defining some uncommon terms that may
give the reader confusion as some they are operationally
or maybe conceptually used.

THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORKS

This chapter shows the related literature and

studies that give direction to the research topic.
This also serves as a guide in conducting the
research. Lastly, this chapter shows the
conceptual and Theoretical Framework of the
study that includes synthesis of the state of the
art.
Review of Related Literature and Studies

Agricultural mechanization
Agricultural mechanization is the application of tools,
machines and equipment in three levels of farm power,
namely, manual power or hand-tool technology (HTT), draft
animal technology (DAT), and motorized power or engine-
powered technology (EPT). Inputs for agricultural
mechanization include tools, implements and powered
machinery for agricultural land preparation, crop
production, harvesting, and preparation for storage, storage
and on farm processing. Agricultural mechanization provides
the basis on how to manufacture, distribute, repair,
maintain, manage and use agricultural tools, implement,
and machines.
Power Tillers
A power tiller is a single axle tractor sometimes
called a walking tractor, a walk behind tractor or
two-wheeled tractor. The transmission of the power
tiller usually consists of a variable speed V-belt drive
from the engine. It has a gear-box which is normally
chain driven. The gear box drives the wheels
through final transmissions. Power losses in the
mechanical transmission systems of power tillers
are usually less than 10% (Macmillan, 2002). One of
power tiller manufactures (VST) addressed that life
of a power tiller is approximately 10years (VST
Tillers Tractors Ltd, 2011).
Synthesis of the state-of-the-Art
The researchers reviewed the Related studies and had
identified the similarities, differences and its close
relationship from each other.

The study of Foreign literature and studies with regard to

grain crops collecting process brought a very important
bearing to the Innovated Motorized hand rice harvester as it
also focuses on the collection of palay.

The study of Alamazan et al. (2018) is very close to the

study as it also focuses on Palay Gathering Machine that
collects 50 kilograms of Palay in 30 minutes, while the study
on the innovated Motorized Hand Rice Harvester focuses on
faster and more convenient way of Harvesting.
Theoretical Framework
The theoretical framework is a graphical
representation that shown the different theories
used as a basis in the study, namely; Theory of
Machine Design, Theory of Effectiveness, and the
Theory of Innovation. These theories lay the
foundation in the development of the device.
Shown in Figure 1 is the Theoretical paradigm.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This chapter shows the methodology used in

the design for the development of the proposed
rice harvester. The machine was planned and
designed according to the availability of the
materials needed in doing the study. The
researchers used different methods in the study to
properly design and fabricate the desired model.
Research Method
This study made use of descriptive-qualitative
and developmental method. The planning and
design involved the meticulous analysis of all
ideas presented by the members of the group.
Several ideas had been digested by the minds of
the researchers after which an initial sketch was
produced. From this sketch, the improved design
was made and become the basis of further
analysis of its operating principles and body
appearance to come up with the in device.
Materials and Equipment Uses
There were corresponding materials used to construct the
Motorized Hand Rice Harvester. Materials used are shown in Table 1.
