II – Determination of Month and Time for Peak

Load Observations & Finding

1. Latitude-Month correction from ASHRAE GRP 158 Table 3.12 shows maximum value for

the month of June (i.e., N=6; E & W = -1; S = -7; Horizontal=0 for 16° N Latitude).

2. Fenestration load in this calculation is very minimal since exterior glasses in the North

wall are shaded and not exposed to direct sunlight. East & West walls do not contain

exterior glasses since locations are in the property lines and are fire rated walls.

3. Roof (A=1291FT²) & East Wall (A=254.2FT²) constitute the biggest areas for external

loads. Roof #1 (Table 3.7 page 3.18, ASHRAE GRP158) without suspended ceiling has

maximum CLTD @ 14:00 HRS (Table 3.8 page 3.19, ASHRAE GRP158). Group E (Table 3.9

page 3.20, ASHRAE GRP 158) East Wall has maximum CLTD @ 13:00 HRS (Table 3.10

page 3.21, ASHRAE GRP 158). The value of Group E East Wall CLTD @ 14:00 HRS is only

one (1) unit less than the CLTD value @ 13:00 HRS.

4. From the above analysis, TIME & MONTH for peak load shall be @ 14:00 HRS in JUNE.

III – Determination of Cooling Load Temperature Differences, CLTD

Note: Items that require CLTD evaluation are; Roof, Exterior Walls & Fenestration

Areas (Glass).

A. Pitched Metal Roof (Roof #1)

From ASHRAE GRP 158 Table 3.8 page 3.19, corrected CLTD for Roof

is: CLTDCORR = [(CLTD + LM) x K + (78 - TR) + (TO – 85)] x f

Where:

CLTD = 79 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.8)

LM=0 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.12)

K=1 color adjustment factor (dark colored roof)

(78-TR) = 0 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

(TO – 85) ; Where: TO = Outside Mean Temperature

TO = Design Outside DB – ½ Daily Range (Note no.2)

TO=94°F–½(20°F)=94–10=84

(TO–85)=84–85=-1 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

f = 1.0 no attic fan (page 3.19) @ note “c”

CLTDCORR = [(79 + 0) x 1 + 0 + (-1)] x 1

CLTDCORR = 78 °F (for Roof)

A. Exterior Walls (Group E)

From ASHRAE GRP 158 Table 3.10 page 3.21, corrected CLTD for Wall is:

CLTDCORR = (CLTD + LM) x K + (78 - TR) + (TO – 85)

Where: K=1 color adjustment factor (dark colored wall)

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES CAMARINES SUR
POLYTECHNIC COLLEGES NABUA,
CAMARINES SUR
GRADUATE SCHOOL
ISO 9001:2008

(78–TR)=0 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

(TO – 85) = -1 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

CLTDCORR = (CLTD + LM) x 1 + 0 + (-1) = (CLTD + LM) - 1 = CLTD + LM - 1

@ 16°N latitude, 14:00 HRS in June & Group E wall; CLTD CORRare as follows:

Orientation CLTD + LM - 1 = CLTDCORR

N 13 + 6 - 1 = 18

S 24 + -7 - 1 = 16

E 37 + -1 - 1 = 35

W 14 + -1 - 1 = 12

B. Fenestration Areas (Glass)

From ASHRAE 1981 Fundamentals Handbook, Table 10 page 26.16, corrected CLTD

for Glass @ 14:00 HRS is:

CLTDCORR = CLTD + (78-TR) or CLTDCORR = CLTD + (TO – 85)

Where: CLTD = 16 (ASHRAE 1981 Fund., Table 10 page 26.16)

(78–TR)=0 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

(TO – 85) = -1 (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.13)

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES CAMARINES SUR
POLYTECHNIC COLLEGES NABUA,

ISO 9001:2008

Therefore;

CLTDCORR = 16+ 0 or CLTDCORR = 16 + (-1)

CLTDCORR = 16 °F or CLTDCORR = 15 °F

Use, CLTDCORR =16°F (for Glass)

IV – Solar Load:

q = A x SC x SHGF x CLF

Where;

q = Glass Solar Load, BTU/HR

A = Area, Net Glass Area Calculated from Plans, FT²

SC = Shading Coefficients (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.18)

SC = 0.94 (¼” to ½” Clear Glass w/o Interior shading)

SHGF = Maximum Solar Heat Gain Factor for Specific Orientation of Surface.

From ASHRAE GRP 158 Table 3.26 page 3.37, for externally shaded glass & @ 16°N

latitude month of June, the SHGF (in BTU/HR-FT²) for the following orientations are:

N=45 S=40 E=46 W=46

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES CAMARINES SUR
POLYTECHNIC COLLEGES NABUA,
CAMARINES SUR
GRADUATE SCHOOL
ISO 9001:2008

CLF = Cooling Load Factor (ASHRAE GRP 158, Table 3.27)

For Glass without interior shading, medium room construction, north latitudes & @ 14:00 HRS,

the CLF for the following orientations are:

N = 0.75 S = 0.58 E = 0.31 W = 0.29

V – Internal Loads
