 With the beginning of the 20th century
the situation changed.
 Growing competition and complexity of
managing have demanded the efficiency
in management process.
ABOUT HENRY FAYOL
Father of Modern Operational
Management.
His contributions were termed as
operational or administrative
management.
He published a book titled
“Administration Industrielle at Generale”.
He used the term administration instead
of management.

Fayol identified the qualities of a manger.
There are 6 types of qualities.
1. Physical
2. Mental
3. Moral
4. Educational

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF
MANAGEMENT
Fayol has given 14 principles of management.
It is a fundamental truth and it establishes
cause-effect relationship.
Through his principles Fayol emphasized on
2 things.
1. List of suggestive management principles.
2. Principles of management are not rigid but
are flexible.

1. DIVISION OF WORK
 Helps to specialize in an activity.
 This increases the output.
 This can be applied to both managerial and
technical work.
2. AUTHORITY & RESPONSIBILITY
 A superior is giving direction to his
employees.
 Responsible is shouldered whenever authority
is exercised.

3. DISCIPLINE
 Discipline is the respect for agreements
which are directed at achieving
obedience, application, energy and
outward marks of respect.
 Discipline is obtained through judicial
application of penalties.

4. UNITY OF COMMAND
 Each subordinate is responsible to only one
superior.
5. UNITY OF DIRECTION
 The activities of a group are expected to be
looked after by the manager.
6. SUBORDINATION OF GROUP
INTEREST TO INDIVIDUAL INTEREST
 Reconciliation of individual interest with
group interest.

7. RENUMERATION OF PERSONNEL
 Wages are determined on the basis of the
work done by the employee.
8. CENTRALIZATION
 Centralization & decentralization of authority
depends upon the personal character of the
superior.
9. SCALAR CHAIN
 It is the chain of superiors ranging from the
ultimate authority to the lowest ranks.

 Principle pf right place for everything
and for everyone should be followed by
management.
11. EQUITY
 It refers to a combination of fairness,
kindness and justice.
 It requires loyalty and devotion from
subordinates.

12. STABILITY OF TENURE OF
PERSONNEL
 Security of job is an essential one. Insecurity
results in high employee turnover.
13. INITIATIVE
 Manager should have conceiving & executing
behavior.
 Managers can take decisions after getting
suggestions from the subordinates.
