During the 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini had sought to put togeth er a coherent
programme for a unitary Italian Republic. He had also for med a sec ret society
called Young Italy for th e disseminat ion of his goa ls. The failure of
revolutionar y uprisings both in 1831 and 1848 meant that the mant le now fel l
on Sardinia-Pied­ mont under its ruler King Victor Emmanuel II to unify the
Italian states t hrough war. In t he eyes of the ruling elites of this region, a unif
ied Italy offer ed th em the possibility of economi c developme nt and polit ical
dominance.
