Appropriation Art

▫ Is the technique of incorporating pre-existing objects and pictures into a

piece of art without really modifying the originals.

▫ Their goal was to create a fresh twist on a well-known image. Originality,

trustworthiness, and attribution are all issues raised by art appropriation.

▫ Appropriation in art and art history refers to the practice of artists using
pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the
original

3
Background

▫ Appropriation may be traced back to Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque's

cubist collages and assemblages from 1912 onwards, in which genuine
materials such as newspapers were inserted to represent themselves. The
practice was further refined in the readymades created by French artist
Marcel Duchamp beginning in 1915.

Appropriation Art – Pop Art

▫ Pop art began in the 1950s. Pop art is a style of art based on simple,
bold images of everyday items, such as soup cans, painted in bright
colors. Pop artists created pictures of consumer product labels and
packaging, photos of celebrities, comic strips, and animals. The
surprised woman in this image is an example of a comic strip style of
pop art. Notice how it uses bold colors.
