Current Status of

Jammu & Kashmir


What is Article 370?
o Article 370 of the Indian constitution gave special status
to Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it to have a separate
constitution, a state flag and autonomy over the internal
administration of the state.
o It was drafted in Part XXI of the Indian constitution and was
titled as “Temporary, Transitional and Special Provisions”
o It stated that the Constituent Assembly of Jammu and
Kashmir would determine the extent to which the laws of the
constitution would apply to the state.
o On 5 August 2019, the Government of India issued a
Presidential Order replacing the 1954 order and making all the
provisions of the Indian constitution applicable to Jammu and
Kashmir.
o A further order on 6 August made all the clauses of Article 370
inoperative except for clause 1.
CURRENT STATUS :
Due to the abrogation of Article 370, the status of Jammu
and Kashmir changed. Today we will discuss:

2. DEVELOPMENTAL STATUS

3. ECONOMICAL STATUS

4. TERRORISM STATUS
Political Status:
o Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 have lost the status of a state & have
been divided into three Union territories namely Jammu & Kashmir, Leh and Laddak.
o The three districts came under the president's rule with Girish Chandra Murmu as the first
governor followed by Manoj Sinha who is the current governor.
o The last chief Minister before the abrogation of the article 370 was Mehbooba Mufti of PDP.

Developmental Status:
o The J&K region before the abrogation of art.370 enjoyed a special status in which no citizen
from any other part of the country could purchase any piece of land in his or her name
o After the abrogation of article 370 as planned by our Prime Minister Sh. Narender Modi J&K is
transforming from a 'separate state' to a 'super state’.
o The new laws opened up the non-agricultural land for outsiders as such Big Industrial houses
have started setting up industrial parks which has improved the development of the region,
increasing job opportunities for the youth of the region.
Economic Status:
o After the abrogation of Article 370, the core sectors of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy faced a steep
decline.
o Kashmir’s economy lost 178.78 billion and more than 90,000 people lost their jobs due to militant threats,
curfews, communication and internet blockades.
o Sectors directly dependant on internet like IT and E-commerce were ruined.
o No support was given to the helpless farmers who lost their jobs due to restrictions on trading.
o Though, after the blockade was lifted in October 2019, the unemployment rate decreased.

Terrorism Status:
o Incidents of violence have reduced significantly in Kashmir valley after August 5, 2019.
o Security forces have achieved major success against terrorists. According to Union Ministry of Home Affairs
report, terror-related activities have reduced by around 36% in the valley after the abrogation of Article 370.
o 188 terror-related incidences were recorded in Kashmir, January 2019 but this was reduced to 120 in
January 2020. Also,126 terrorists were killed in Kashmir during the same period in 2019 while 136 terrorists
were killed in 2020. 
o The number of IED attacks has also reduced significantly as only one IED attack took place in Kashmir
from January 2020. The number of IED attacks during the same period in 2019 was six.
