UNIT 1

Solutions
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures
At the end of this lesson, you will:
⮚ Define the terms mixture, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture,
solute, solvent, solution, suspension and colloids;
⮚ Distinguish between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures;
⮚ Describe Sulution, suspension and colloids;
Mixture
Mixtures are combinations of two or more substances in which
each substance retains its own chemical identity and hence its own
properties.
1. A Homogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition
of the mixture is the same throughout.
Examples: Air, Sugar water, Rainwater, Vodka, Vinegar,
Dishwashing detergent, Steel
2. A Heterogeneous mixture has one or more visible boundaries
between the components.
3. Examples: Cereal in milk, Vegetable soup, Pizza, Blood, Gravel,
4. Ice in soda, Salad dressing, Mixed nuts,
5. Bowl of colored candies, Soil
Homogeneous vs Heterogeneous Mixture

Homogeneous mixture Heterogeneous mixture

It has a uniform composition It has a non-uniform composition

It has only one phase There are two or more phases

It can’t be separated out It can be separated out

physically physically

‘homo’ means the same ‘hetero’ means different

Example: a mixture of alcohol Example: a mixture of sodium

and water chloride and sand
