What is Canadian English?

 Canadian English is the variety of English spoken in Canada.


English is the first language, or "mother tongue", of approximately
24 million Canadians and more than 28 million are fluent in the
language.

 CANADIAN ENGLISH IS A PRODUCT OF SEVERAL WAVES OF


IMMIGRATION AND SETTLEMENT OVER MORE THAN TWO
CENTURIES.
Origins

 English was first spoken in Canada in the 17th century, in seasonal fishing
communities along the Atlantic coast, including the island of Newfoundland, and
at fur trade posts around Hudson Bay.
Spelling
Vocabulary

 Where Canadian English shares vocabulary with other English


dialects, it tends to share most with American English, but also has
many non-American terms distinctively shared instead with Britain.
Grammar

 Variationin grammar – morphology and syntax – can also


be found in Canadian English.
 In speech and in writing, Canadian English speakers permit (and often use) a
transitive form for some past participles where only an intransitive form is
permitted in most other dialects.
Canadian slang

 Canadian slang as a variation of substandard speech is obvious


nowadays. The lexical constituent of Anglo-Canadian slang is very
dissimilar.
Conclusion

 The study of Canadian English has come a long way since


the first serious attempts in the mid-1950s. It has reached
critical mass and is now in the position to tell the story of
Canadian English and its varieties, but it is also develops
nowadays creating new words, grammar and slang.
