MEIOSIS (REDUCTION DIVISION)

 Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number

of chromosomes in the parent cell by half and produces
four gamete cells. This process is required to produce
egg and sperm cells for sexual reproduction. During
reproduction, when the sperm and egg unite to form a
single cell, the number of chromosomes is restored in the
offspring.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS I
Phase Mitosis Meiosis I

Prophase No synapsis, double-stranded Synapsis, double-stranded

chromosomes move to spindle chromosomes move to spindle in
individually pairs

Metaphase Each chromosome attached to The 2 chromosomes of each

separate microtubules; centromeres homologous pair attached to the same
in chromatids of double –stranded microtubules centromeres in
chromosomes split chromatids of double-stranded
chromosomes do not split

Anaphase Separation of new single-stranded Separation of cold double-stranded

chromosomes derived from one chromosomes of each synaptic pair

Telophase Formation of 2 new nuclei each with Formation of 2 new nuclei each with
the number of chromosomes as half the chromosomes present in
parental nucleus; chromosomes parental nucleus; chromosomes
single-stranded when they fade from double-stranded when they fade from
view view

Interphase Replication of genetic material; with No replication of genetic material

Interkinesis formation of new chromatids and hence no new chromatids formed
MEIOSIS II
 The second meiotic division.
 The process is similar to mitosis through its
genetic results are fundamentally different.
 The end result is production of 4 haploid cells
from 2 haploid cells produced in meiosis I.
STAGES OF MEIOSIS II
 Prophase II
centrosomes move to the
polar regions and arrange spindle
fibers for the second meiotic
division.
 Metaphase II
chromosomes line up along the equator
of the cell.
 Anaphase II
The sister chromatids by convention are now
called sister chromosomes as they move towards the
opposing poles.
 Telophase II
Cytoplasm is divided through cytokinesis
producing 4 haploid cells.
