Meiosis II
The second cell division in Meiosis.
Essentially similar to an ordinary mitotic division
since the goal is to segregate a chromatid of each
chromosome into separate daughter cells.
Separates the sister chromatids of each replicated
chromosome and sends them to opposite sides of
the cell.
It forms 4 haploid cells.
Haploid cells carry only one complete sets of
chromosomes and is presented by n.
THE 4 PHASES OF
MEIOSIS II
• Prophase 2
• Metaphase 2
• Anaphase 2
• Telophase 2
PROPHASE II
Spindle fibers begin to
form.
Nuclear membrane breaks.
PROPHASE II

• While chromosome duplication took

place prior to meiosis I, no new
chromosome replication occurs before
meiosis II.
METAPHASE II
Chromosomes align at the
center
Spindle fibers form
completely. (Spindle fibers
attach to the centromeres.)
METAPHASE II

• For each chromosome, the

kinetochores of the sister
chromatids face the opposite
poles, and each is attached to a
kinetochore microtubule coming
from that pole.
ANAPHASE II
Chromatids of each
chromosome are pulled
apart and move toward the
opposite sides.
Membrane begins to pinch
at the center.
ANAPHASE II

• The centromeres separate, and

the two chromatids of each
chromosome move to opposite
poles on the spindle. The
separated chromatids are now
called chromosomes in their own
right.
TELOPHASE II
Nuclear membrane
appears.
Membrane pinches
completely to form the
cells. (4 daughter cells)
TELOPHASE II

• A nuclear envelope forms around each

set of chromosomes.
• Cytokinesis takes place, producing four
daughter cells (gametes, in animals),
each with a haploid set of
chromosomes.
• Because of crossing-over, some
chromosomes are seen to have
recombined segments of the original
parental chromosomes
This is how the Meiosis II works…
HOW IS MEIOSIS 1 AND MEIOSIS II
DIFFERENT
Homologous pairs of cells are present in
Meiosis 1 and separate into chromosomes
before Meiosis II. In Meiosis II, the
chromosomes are further separated into
chromatids. Meiosis I includes crossing
over or recombination of genetic material
between chromosome pairs, while
Meiosis II does not.
HOW IS MEIOSIS II SIMILAR TO
MITOSIS
Meiosis II is very similar to Mitosis. In
both cases chromosomes line up and sister
chromatids are separated by the action of
the spindle fibers. The daughter cells are
genetically identical to one another.
