What’s New & What Is It
Instructions: Answer the statement below by writing True or False. Write your
answer directly on a separate sheet of paper.
1. A person can acquire HIV/ AIDS from using intravenous syringe used
by the infected person.
4
Sexually-transmitted infection is preventable. The first step is to remain sexually
abstinent until marriage. Next is to obtain accurate information about these diseases
and recognize inaccurate information. Third is to enhance life skills. By knowing how
to make decisions and practice refusal skills you can never go wrong in safeguarding your
health.
Early symptoms of infection with HIV may include a rash, sore throat, fever, and
tiredness. Nearly everyone with HIV develops AIDS. People with AIDS cannot fight off
diseases that healthy people could easily resist. Because AIDS has no cure, people with
AIDS eventually die from one of these diseases.
HIV must enter into the person’s bloodstream to infect the person. HIV has been
found in many body fluids including blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk of infected
person. (Adapted from Department of Education Learning Module Health 8, 2013)

1. It causes drunkenness
LOHOCLA
2. A type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks

_3. Alcohol at a lower dose TNALUMITS
Alcohol (ethanol or ethyl alcohol) is the ingredient found in beer, wine and spirits that
causes drunkenness.
Alcohol is formed when yeast ferments (breaks down without oxygen) the sugars in
different food. For example, wine is made from the sugar in grapes, beer from the sugar in
malted barley (a type of grain), cider from the sugar in apples, vodka from the sugar
in potatoes, beets or other plants.
Alcohol is classed as a ‘sedative hypnotic’ drug2, which means it acts to depress the
central nervous system at high doses. At lower doses, alcohol can act as a stimulant,3
inducing feelings of euphoria and talkativeness, but drinking too much alcohol at one session
can lead to drowsiness, respiratory depression (where breathing becomes slow, shallow
or stops entirely), coma or even death.
As well as its acute and potentially lethal sedative effect at high doses, alcohol has
effects on every organ in the body and these effects depend on the blood
alcohol concentration (BAC) over time.
