TOUCH SCREEN 2
What is a touch screen?

A computer display that enables the user to interact

with the computer by touching areas on the screen.

It can detect the presence and location of a touch within

the display area. .

A touch screen is an input device like a mouse or track

pad.

TOUCH SCREEN 3
How does a touch screen works?

A basic touchscreen has three main components:

Touch sensor

Controller

Software driver.

TOUCH SCREEN 4
Touch Sensor :

A touch screen sensor is a

clear glass panel with a touch
responsive surface.

The touch sensor is

placed over a display screen
so that the responsive area of
the panel covers the viewable
area of the video screen.

TOUCH SCREEN 5
Controller :

It is a small PC card that connects

between the touch sensor and the PC.

It takes information from the touch

sensor and translates it into
information that PC can understand.

The controller is usually installed

inside the monitor.

The controller determines what type of

connection you will need on the PC.

TOUCH SCREEN 6
Software Driver :

The driver is a software update for the PC system that

allows the touch
screen and computer to work together.

It tells the computer's operating system how to

interpret the touch event information that is sent from
the controller.

Most touch screen drivers today are a mouse-emulation

type driver. This makes touching the screen the same
as clicking your mouse at the same location on the
screen.

Types of touch screens

Today technology offers a varieties

of touch screen solutions.

TOUCH SCREEN 8
4- Wire Resistive touch screens.

4-Wire Resistive touchscreen is

pressure sensitive so it responds to any
input device, including finger, gloved
hand, or pen stylus

It is a reliable and affordable

technology that is widely used by
individuals and in less demanding
workplace applications.

5-Wire Resistive Touch screens

We offer 5-Wire Resistive touchscreen

technology with the CRT and LCD touch
monitors that we offer.

It is a durable and accurate technology

that is widely used in demanding
workplace applications such as point-of-
sale systems, industrial controls, and
medical systems.

It is pressure sensitive so it responds to

any input device, including finger, gloved
hand, or pen stylus. TOUCH SCREEN 10

SAW touchscreen

Surface waves are readily

absorbed when a soft object such
as a fingertip touches the
substrate.

SAW Touch Screen use pure glass

with transmitting and receiving
piezoelectric transducers for both
the X and Y axes.

The touch screen controller

sends an electrical signal to the
transmitting transducer, which
converts the signal into
ultrasonic waves within the glass.

Multi-touch technology

 Multi-touch denotes a set of

interaction techniques which allow
computer users to control graphical
applications with several fingers.

Products:
 Apple iPhone, iPod touch, MacBook
Air, and MacBook Pro

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF TOUCH SCREEN

TOUCH SCREEN 15
ADVANTAGE

big screen is ideal for web browsing, picture and movies

touchscreen gadgets usually have simple user interfaces,

which are more intuitive

touchscreen devices have fewer buttons that might break

after a few months/years of operation

TOUCH SCREEN 16
DISADVANTAGE

big screen leads to low battery life

touchscreen means screen can’t be read too well in

direct sunlight as it applies an additional not 100%
transparent

touchscreen devices usually has no additional keys.

TOUCH SCREEN 17
What are touch screens used for?

Public Information Displays

tourism displays, trade show displays

and other electronic displays.

Retail and Restaurant Systems

employees can get work done faster, and training time
can be reduced for new employees.

Customer Self-Service

to improve customer service at busy stores, fast

service restaurants, transportation hubs.

Conclusions
The integrity of touch screens in-service is of great importance.

Touch screens are now an integral part of the display industry

and the market is expanding rapidly. Our results highlight the

possible wear mechanisms in resistive touch screens which have

not been studied to date. We have shown that wear depends on

the deformation of the top sheet and the tribological properties

of the ITO. In addition we will report on the dependence of wear

on time, contact load and sliding speed.
