DEFINATION OF PARAGRAPH:-

A paragraph is often defined as a group of related


sentences in which one single, main idea is
developed. In a typical paragraph, the first
sentence declares the main topic of the paragraph
and the rest of the sentences develop or support
the main idea. A paragraph is most often a part of
a longer composition comprising of several
paragraphs.
A GOOD PARAGRAPH HAS:-

UNITY:-

• One main idea

• The paragraph shows unity. All the sentences effectively
relate back to the topic sentence at the beginning of the
paragraph.
COHERENCE:-
• Well organized details :- Spatial

• A clear, sensible connection
• Linkers/connectors
• A coherent paragraph has sentences that all logically follow each other; they are not isolated
thoughts. Coherence can be achieved in several ways. First, using transitions helps connect
ideas from one sentence to the next. For more on transitions, see the Write Right on
Transitions. Second, ordering thoughts in numerical sequence helps to direct the reader from
one point to the next. Third, structuring each paragraph according to one of the following
patterns helps to organize sentences: general to particular; particular to general; whole to
parts; question to answer; or effect to cause.
THE THREE BASIC PARTS OF
PARAGRAPH ARE:-

• The Topic Sentences


• The Supporting Sentences
• The Concluding Sentences
THE TOPIC SENTENCES:-

• This is the main idea of the paragraph. It is usually the first sentence of
the paragraph, and it is the most general sentence of the paragraph.
• Often, the Topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph. Also, we
can call an introduction sentence of a paragraph.
• It states the main idea of each paragraph and displays how the idea
connects to the thesis or overall focus of the paper.
• All consequent points presented in the paragraphs must support the
topic sentence.
THE SUPPORTING SENTENCES:-
• These are the sentences that talk about or explain the topic sentence. They are more detailed ideas
that follow the topic sentence.
• The supporting sentences explain more about the topic sentence by showing some facts, stats, or
examples regarding the topic.
• It also includes the writer’s experience & own analysis and used to develop the topic sentence.
• The following are common origins of supporting details:

Research Studies
Your Own Analysis

THE CONCLUDING SENTENCES:-

• This may be found as the last sentence of the paragraph. It can finish a paragraph
by repeating the main idea or just giving a final comment about the topic.
• It is the end of the paragraph which is also known as final statement about the
topic.
• It ties all ideas given in the paragraph and emphasizes the main idea one last
time.
• In the concluding sentence, the writer usually restates their topic sentence or
summarizes the main points of the paragraph.
PARAGRAPH WRITING SAMPLE:-

My Dog Romeo is so much fun to play with. One reason he’s fun is because he loves
to play catch. What’s also fun is that he follows me around the house with a toy and
drops it on my foot, so I will kick it. Additionally, he can catch just about anything, but
his favorite thing to catch is a Frisbee. Finally, he loves it when I pretend like I’m falling
dead, and he runs over to lick me. All these reasons show why I really have fun playing
with Romeo.
