Teresa Magbanua was a Filipina school teacher who became the first woman in Panay to fight in the Philippine Revolution. She was born in 1868 in Pototan, Iloilo and known as the Visayan Joan of Arc. Magbanua quit teaching to become a housewife but learned to shoot a pistol and ride a horse. She joined the Panay-based Visayan arm of the Katipunan and was the only woman to lead troops in the area during the Revolution. Magbanua died in 1947 in Pagadian, Zamboanga and awards have been established in her honor for teachers and women's rights.
