Plasma Arc Cutting
You many remember the
three states of matter
(the solids, liquids, and
gases) from science
class back in your
school days. What many
people don’t know (or
forget) is another state
of matter called plasma
If you want to get the kind of plasma that’s
needed to cut metal, you have to apply quite a lot
of heat to a gas
O Plasma cutting produces very high
temperatures and very bright, intense
Some of the metals that you can very easily cut by
using plasma cutting
include
O ✓ Aluminum
O ✓ Magnesium
O ✓ Stainless steel
O ✓ Brass
O ✓ Copper
O ✓ Cast iron
O ✓ Mild steel
O ✓ High nickel steel
O ✓ Most other non-ferrous (iron-free) metals
Benefits that come with using plasma cutting.

✓ Plasma cutting
machines don’t require
any gas cylinders.
✓ You can cut a huge
range of metals.
✓ Plasma cutting is fast.
You can cut four times
faster with plasma cutting
Plasma cutting is an amazing
process, but it’s not perfect
✓ It requires electricity, so
it’s not as portable as
oxyfuel cutting
✓ Most plasma cutters
require a clean source of
air in your shop
✓ Plasma cutting presents
a risk of serious electrical
shock.
