PRACTICAL REPORT

NAME : NUR SYAMIERA BT ZAKARIA

ID : 53106116127
CLASS : 3AEM3
TOPIC : WELDING (SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING & GAS WELDING)
LECTURER : WAN NUR SHAQELLA WAN ABDUL RAZAK
PRACTICAL 4.1 : Welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)

Objective:
To understand of arc welding in joining process such as make a butt-joint. Besides, the students
will able to know the problem that occurs on the arc welding process and able to choose the right
type of metal and electrode that used in arc welding.

Hand Tools & Materials:

1. AC or DC constant current supply
2. Apron
3. Chipping hammer
4. Electrode holder
5. Electrode lead
6. Gloves
7. Ground clamp
8. Head shield
9. Pieces of metal
10. Welding electrode (MS 6013)
11. Wire brush
12. Work lead
Procedures:

1. Clean the surface of the metal plate with wire brush before welding. Place as close tothe
weld as possible to the metal plate.
2. Before striking an arc, insert an electrode to the electrode holder.
3. Determine the best arc length. As a guideline the arc for a 1/16" to 3/32" diameter
electrode is 1/16" (1.6mm). The arc length for a 1/8" and 5/32" electrode is 1/8" (3mm).
4. Tack weld the two pieces of metal to hold them in place. This will reduce joint distortion,
which is caused by the expansion and contraction of metal as it is heated and cooled.
5. Start weld from left to right or right to left to complete one straight arc.
6. Have a chipping hammer available to remove any slag doing after pass with the weld.
PRACTICAL 4.2: Welding (Gas Welding)

Objective:
To understand on how to use oxyacetylene gas in cutting process. Besides, the students will able
to choose the right type of torch that are used in gas welding.

Hand Tools & Materials:

1. Oxygen and acetylene gas cylinders for combustion

2. Pressure regulator to adjust and stabilize the gas pressure

3. Two-way valve to control the one way flow of oxygen and acetylene gas

4. Gas hose to channel the gas from the cylinder to the torch

5. Special key to lock or unlock the oxygen and acetylene gas cylinder valve

6. Spark lighter to ignite the welding torch

7. Cutting torch

8. Some pieces of metal

9. Filler rod

10. Fluxs

11. Wire brush

12. Goggle

13. Gloves
Procedures:

1. Make sure work area is clean and tidy.

2. Prepare the metal that you want to cut on the table.
3. Determine the size the cutting torch that suitable with the thickness of the metal.
4. Make a line on the surface the metal with chock, Scriber at the place that you want to cut.
5. Spark the torch and start the cutting at 90 on the base metal.
6. Start the cutting from the corner. Make pre-heated on the metal until it like red. After that
released the pour oxygen to cut the metal.

STEPS ATTACHMENT

Eye and face protection: Proper eye and face protection

for welding safety varies depending on the particular task
being performed. Helmet, handshield, goggles and safety
glasses or combination of these are acceptable protection
in various applications.

Proper ventilation can be obtained either naturally or

mechanically. Natural ventilation is considered sufficient
for welding and brazing operations.

Welding helmets with filter plates are intended to help

protect users from arc rays and from weld sparks and
spatters that strike directly against the helmet. They are
not intended to protect against slag chips, grinding
fragments, wire wheel bristles and similar hazards that
can ricochet under the helmet. Spectacles, goggles or
other appropriate eye protection must also be worn to
protect against these impact hazards.
Analysis

Discussion

The welding practice is a new skills that i have learn to make a Arc and Gas Welding. At the same
time, we learn to use a right tools and materials when doing work at welding workshop. Arc and
Gas Welding is also give us more skills and preparation when we work outside later. When we
see a result from the work that we have done together, we are very grateful when we have finish
our work in a sharp time that have given by our lecturer. The talent that our lecturer have give to
us is bring us to a new experience about welding and more information about welding. These
practical also give us advantage when we work together with our team and we also can learn
many information through share knowledge together

Conclusion

At these practical, we learn about how to joining the plat iron use the Arc and Gas Weding. Other
than that we also have been teach by our lecturer how to adjust the volume of the electric. Besides
that, our teacher always remain us to stay alert in safety while doing a work before and after finish
the practice. Conclusion is I want to thanks to lecturer and my friend during learning of arc and
gas weldingmore information about welding.
