QAMER 1

Objective:
Our first laboratory experiment required us to first learn all safety measures and to also
learn how to use the AC/DC power supply. When dealing with high voltage power sources,
safety is the most important factor. For this experiment, we were to learn the tools we work
with and how to safely operate them. With electrical sources, shocks can occur if safety rules
are disregarded and some shocks, specifically ones that contain over 100 mill amperes of
current, can be fatal.
The main piece of equipment used in this experiment is the AC/DC Power Supply
Module EMS 8821. It provides all of the necessary AC/DC power, both fixed and variable, single
phase and three-phase. Using the AC/DC power supply module, we were to run several
experiments to give us an understanding of how the power supply module functions. When
using the power supply, safety is the main concern so each connection should be done with the
power turned off.

Equipment:
 AC/DC Power Supply Module EMS 8821
 AC Metering Module (250V) EMS 8426
 Connection Leads EMS 9128
 HP Multimeter

Experimental Procedure:
1. First we had to examine the construction of the Power Supply module EMS 8821. See
Figure 1, which contains the
list of components we had
to identify.

1. Second we had to state the ac or dc voltage and the rated current

available from the terminals listed.

2. Next we had to identify the interior construction of the module,

and identify a list of items. See Figure 2 below

3. Insert the Power Supply Module into the console. Make sure that
on-off switch is in the off position and that the output control
knob is turned fully counterclockwise for a minimum output.
Insert the power cable, through the clearance hole in the rear of

the console, into the twist-lock module connector. Connect the

other end of the power cable into a source of 3ϕ 120/208 volts.
4. Set the voltmeter selector switch to its 7-N position and turn the
power supply on by placing on-off breaker in its “up” position.
Turn the control knob and note the dc voltage increases. Return
the knob to 0.
5. Repeat steps 5, 6 for the 4-N ac voltage.
6. List ac voltage affected by turning knob.
7. For each of the listed conditions, connect 250Vac across specified
terminals, turn on power supply, measure and record voltage and
shut off power.
8. Set voltmeter selector switch to 8-N, record voltage
9. For each of the listed conditions turn on power supply and rotate
knob fully measure and record voltage return to zero and shut off
power.

Discussion & Conclusions:

This experiment was designed to teach us the safety measures needed in order to fully
operate the Power Supply Module. Everything bit of equipment must be accounted for in order
to safely operate such a power supply. Whether it is the live voltages and currents running
through the various meters, the connection leads, or even sharp corners on the mechanism
itself, safety comes first because the slightest mistake could be very costly.
When dealing with taking measurements of various voltages, we had to make sure every
connection was a proper one. We also had to make sure the power was off before making any
changes or connections that could effect the readings. Learning the basic terminals and how
they produce voltages will be helpful in our further experiments and we are looking forward to
learn more of the functions the power supply has.
