Reliability Engineering

Production organizations deploy Reliability Engineering for highly

reliable components and systems.

Reliability is the probability that an asset or production system will

continue to work normally over a specified interval of time, under

specified conditions.
How production organizations deploy reliability engineering techniques
RET?
Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)
Failure modes and effects (and criticality) analysis (FMEA,FMECA)
Root cause analysis (RCA)
Condition-based maintenance
Improved work planning and work control, etc.
Adopt life cycle cost-based design and procurement strategies
Change management schemes
However, the adoption is slow.
Why?
It isn't hard
It takes a bit of time
It takes a bit of effort
It takes a bit of investment
Most companies are reluctant to spend money to get reliability
Many management does not understand the correlation between lack of
reliability and the losses
Please Mr. manager tell me how to get it right?
Teach me how to do it right and I will do it right for you
But the manager wouldn't even know what to do
Supervisor doesn't know any better way
Supervisor gave task assignment to his people
The planner wrote task out and thought it was enough
The manager kicked it off to the planner

Why?
The planner prepare Job plan:
1. Prepare Work Area
2. Isolation and Handover
3. Access Blocks and Bearings
4. Check Shaft Condition and Tolerance
5. Measure Bearing Internal Clearance
6. Measure Base Plate
7. Locate Bearings on Shaft
8. Mount Bearings on Shaft
9. Position Blocks and Place Pulley
10. Complete Block and Seals Assembly
11. Align Blocks
12. Lubricate Bearing and Seals
13. Bolt Down
14. Commission and Test
15. Clean-up and Hand Back
