“Global Warming is no longer a future threat,

no longer a threat at all.
It's our reality.”
BILL MCKIBBEN
GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth's average surface temperature over the past
century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released by people burning fossil fuels.

Global average surface

temperature is rising. By the
beginning of the 21st century,
Earth’s temperature was roughly
0.5 degrees Celsius above the
long-term (1951–1980) average.

GLOBAL WARMING: CAUSES
When carbon dioxide (CO2) and other
air pollutants and greenhouse gases
collect in the atmosphere

these absorb sunlight and solar radiation

that have bounced off the earth's surface

pollutants can last for years to

centuries, trap the heat and cause the
planet to get hotter (GREENHOUSE
EFFECT) and changing our climate in
multiple ways
GLOBAL WARMING: CAUSES
Humans are also responsible for
greenhose gases
• combustion of fossil fuels in cars,
buildings, factories and power plants
• Carbon Dioxide is the gas responsible
for global warming
• Methane from landfills, natural gas,
agriculture and petroleumindustries are
also considered contributors
• nitrous oxide gas, gases for
refrigeration and industrial process are
also the causes of global warming
GLOBAL WARMING: EFFECTS
• environmental, economic, and health
consequences are likely to occur
• melting glaciers, early snowmelt, and
severe droughts will cause more dramatic
water shortages
• increase the risk of wildfires
• sea level rise will lead to coastal flooding
• forests, farms, and cities will face
troublesome new pests, heat waves, heavy
downpours, and increased flooding
• disruption of habitats that leads to
extinction
• Climate Change occurs
CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate Change is the defining issue

of our time and we are at a defining
moment. From shifting weather
patterns that threaten food production,
to rising sea levels that increase the risk
of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of
climate change are global in scope and
unprecedented in scale.
CLIMATE CHANGE: CAUSE (Greenhouse Gases)
Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect inlcude:

• Water Vapor - increases as the Earth's atmosphere

warms
• Carbon Dioxide - A minor but very important
component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is
released through natural processes such as respiration
and volcano eruptions and through human activities
• Methane - A hydrocarbon gas produced both through
natural sources and human activities
• Nitrous Oxide - A powerful greenhouse gas
produced by soil cultivation practices
• Chlorofluorocarbons - Synthetic compounds entirely
of industrial origin used in a number of applications
CLIMATE CHANGE: EFFECTS

• glaciers shrunk
• ice on rivers
• lost of habitat
• sea level rise
• temperature will continue to rise
• everything will be destroyed
CLIMATE CHANGE: EFFECTS
In the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt
end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era —
and of human civilization.

This graph, based on the comparison of

atmospheric samples contained in ice
cores and more recent direct
measurements, provides evidence that
atmospheric CO2 has increased since the
Industrial Revolution.
ACID RAIN
Acid rain describes any form of precipitation that contains high levels of nitric and sulfuric acids. It
can also occur in the form of snow, fog, and tiny bits of dry material that settle to Earth. Normal rain
is slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.6, while acid rain generally has a pH between 4.2 and 4.4.
ACID RAIN: CAUSES

• rotting vegetation
• erupting volcano
• coal-burning power plants, factories
and automobiles
• air pollutants: fossil fuels, sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides
ACID RAIN: EFFECTS

• environmental and health

concerns for it can spread easily
via air pollution
• formation of ground-level
ozone, the major pollutant that
is very harmful to people
• sulfur dioxide and nitrogen
dioxides are those who greatly
contribute to global warming
