WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

PRE-TREATMENT
once the dirty water pass through a toilet or
to any path that the water go through, it will
undergo a process called PRE-
TREATMENT
this is to remove the outliers in the sewage
and make the whole mixture a little more
homogeneuos (less chunky)
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

PRE-TREATMENT
then it will go through bar screens which are
large vertical bars design to stop larger items
from getting into pumps
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

PRE-TREATMENT
next it will go to a grit chamber

the velocity of the rather viscous sewage is

adjusted to allow for particles of sand and
rock to settle out

there are 3 types of grit chambers:

(1) Horizontal Grit Chambers
(2) Aerated Grit Chambers
(3) Vortex Grit Chambers
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

PRE-TREATMENT
next, it will pass through primary clarifiers

flow rate of water being pumped in doesn't

exceed the settling velocity of the particles
trying to be removed
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

PRE-TREATMENT
the dirty water who pass through the
previous treatment will now be considered
effluent
this water is slightly treated wastewater; free
of solids larger than 10micrometer; mostly
organic matter
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

SECONDARY
TREATMENT
effluent flows in an aeration basin which
creates bubbles using tiny aire blowers

Return Activated Sludge (RAS) is present

WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

a) Biofilters (Trickling Filters) trickle the effluent over a

SECONDARY medium like stone or plastic so bacteria will be reduced
b) Aerobic Digestion is the breakdown of organic matter
TREATMENT using the excess oxygen
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

SECONDARY
TREATMENT
it will then go to secondary filter/clarifier

sludge is removed and pumped back into the

aeration basins as the RAS

it is the final removal of solids and

biological matter

85% of bacteria/dirt is removed

WASTEWATER
TREATMENT DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

DISINFECTIO
N
the process could be either of the three:
Chlorination, Ozone, Ultraviolet

CHLORINATION: a concentrated bleach is added to the effluent to kill any remaining bacteria

OZONE: pumping electrical current through the water that causes oxygen molecules (O2) to disassociate and
combine with free oxygen forming O3 known as Ozone which kills off bacteria

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT: scramble bacteria's DNA so they won't be able to multiply; bacteria aren't killed rather
sterilized making them harmless to human
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

EFFLUENT RELEASE
clean water, free of dirt, and can be released to a stream or any other
water source

Note: Effluent (clean water) could also undergo another treatment

process for some areas who needs more filtration
WASTEWATER
TREATMENT
DURATION: 24-36 HOURS

CHANGES OF WATER
dirty water - effluent - clean water
