DIET MODIFIED IN

CONSISTENCY
MODULE 7:
Modified Consistency Diet

• A modified consistency
diet provides foods that
have a texture that is
easier to eat. Foods can
be chopped, ground or
pureed. The diet is based
on your individual food
tolerances.
• People who find it difficult to chew
may benefit from this consistency
diet. Conditions that call for the use
of this diet include absence of
teeth, loose dentures or sore
gums.

• You may also need this type of diet


if you have had a head or neck
injury or surgery.
Routine Hospital Diets
• FULL, GENERAL OR REGULAR DIET- DESIGNED
FOR POATIENTS WHO REQUIRE NO SPECIAL
DIETARY MODIFICATIONS OR RESTRICTIONS.

• SOFT DIET – PATIENTS WHO ARE UNABLE TO


CHEW, SWALLOW OR DIGEST FOODS.

• LIQUID DIET – CLEAR, FULL, COLD OSTERIZED,


BLENDERIZEDOR TUBE FEEDING.
MODIFIED OR THERAPEUTIC DIET
• These diets are modifications of the regular diet
designed to meet specific patients needs. These
include:

SOFT
• Method of preparation ( boiling or broilling)
• Consistency ( ground or chopped )
• Total calories ( high or low calories diets )
• Nutrients ( altering carbohydrates, protein, fat,
vitamins, minerals )
• Allowing only specific foods ( diabetic diet )
LIQUID DIET
1.Clear Liquid Diet

❑Also called non residue diet.


 This diet is made up of clear liquid foods
which leave no residue in the
gastrointestinal tract.
 It is non-distending, non irritating and
non stimulating to peristalsis action.
 Itis intended to supply fluid and
energy food in form that requires
minimal digestion.
 It is used to relieve thirst, to provide
fluid for prevention of dehydration.
 Serves as the initial feeding after
surgery or intravenous feeding.
Indications for Use:
• Pre-operative and post operative cases with
GIT motor function.
• Acute diarrhea, as initial diet.
• Vomiting, if tolerated.
• Intestinal Obstruction.
• Acute phase of fevers and infections before
diagnosis.
• Acute inflammatory conditions of the GIT 
When it is necessary to reduce fecal material.
Suggested Meal Pattern:
• Give 6 to 8 ounces of allowed
liquids every hour or as desired.
• Use should be limited to 24 to
48 hours since it is nutritionally
inadequate.
• Otherwise, parental feeding is
recommended.
Full Liquid Diet
• Is allowance of foods which are liquid or
which readily become liquid at body
temperature.
• When carefully planned, the diet may
be adequate in energy value and protein
and can therefore be used for several
days.
• The diet is given in six or more feedings
per day.
Indications For Use:
✔ Post operative cases with normal GIT
function.
✔ Fevers and infections, when solid foods
cannot be tolerated.
✔ Difficulty in swallowing as in fractured
jaw and after oral surgery.
✔ Lesions in mouth and GIT.
✔Transition from clear liquid to soft or
regular diet.
Cold Liquid Diet
• this diet is used after tonsillectomy,
dental extraction, or other minor
operations on the mouth and throat.
• All liquids are served cold or iced.
• Shar or sour fruit juices and hot
soups are not given as they may
cause pain and bleeding of the
operated area.
Indications For Use:
• To promote relied to fresh mouth sores or following
tonsillectomy.
• To rest the organ included.
• To avoid irritation at the side of the resection.
• To minimize pain in oral cavity.
• To avoid bleeding of operated area.
• To promote rapid wound healing.
• To replace nutrient losses.
• Also provides on oral source of fluids o individual who
are capable of chewing, swallowing, or digesting solid
foods.
Soft Diet
• The soft diet follows the regular diet
pattern but is modified in consistency. It
is designated for patients who are
physically or psychologically unable to
tolerate the regular diet.
• Foods allowed are those which are easy
to digest, such as fruits and vegetables
with low cellulose content, and meats
with little or not tough connective tissues
like elastin.
Indications for Use:
✔Post operative cases when patient
can tolerate solid food but not a full
diet.
✔ Fevers and mild infections.
✔Gastro-intestinal disturbances.
✔ Convalescence.
✔Transition from fluid to regular diet
1. MINIMUM RESIDUE DIET
• The diet is made up of foods which can be completely
absorbed, thereby leaving little or no residue for
formation of faces.
• This diet provides insufficient minerals and vitamins.
• It must be supplemented.
• Foods high in fiber should be omitted.
• Food which contain residue but not fiber such as milk
are also omitted or restricted.
• Two cups of milk may be permitted per day. Strained
fruits and vegetables w/o skins our prevented.
INDICATION
✔Severe diarrhea to afford rest to the
gastrointestinal tract.
✔Acute phases of diverticulitis.
✔Ulcerative colitis in initial stages.
✔Operations.
✔Partial intestinal obstruction.
✔Whenever necessary to reduce bulk in
the gastrointestinal tract.
FOOD SELECTION

• PLAIN, STRAINED FOODS, LEAN, TENDER


MEATS, CHICKEN NO SKIN, SOFT COOKED EGG,
STRAINED VEGETABLES.

• AVOID: MILK, CHEESE, RAW EGGS,


VEGETABLES, FRUITS, COARSE BREAD, FRIED
FOODS.
2.BLAND DIET
• It is a progression of diets made up of foods
which do not unduly increase gastric acid
production and are non-irritating to the GIT.
• The diets range from the very restricted
Bland I to the rather liberal Bland V.
• Bland I to III use liberal amounts of milk
• Bland IV follow the soft bland diet
• Bland V sometimes called full bland and
patterned after the full diet.
INDICATIONS
• Gastric and duodenal ulcers.
• Gastritis.
• Esophageal, gastric and pancreatic
surgery.
• Hernia.
• Some cases of cardiac conditions in
order to rest the heart .
FOOD SELECTION
• MILD IN FLAVOR, NO COARSE
FIBER AND TOUGH CONNECTIVE
TISSUE

• AVOIDED : BLACK PEPPER, CHILI


POWDER, STRONG COFFE,
ALCOHOL
3.MECAHANICAL SOFT
• The diet is also called dental soft or
geriatric soft diet
• It follows the pattern of the regular diet.
• It consists of foods that require minimum
chewing.
• Hard and large pieces of food are
chopped, ground, pureed, sieved or
reduced to small pieces by other
mechanical means.
INDICATION
✔Poor dentures.
✔After oral, head and neck
surgery.
✔Spastic constipation.
✔Diverticulosis.
✔Other gastro-intestinal
disturbances.
FOOD SELECTION
• FULL DIET BUT REDUCED AMOUNT ( GRINDING,
CHOPPING, MINCING )
