TECHNOLOGICAL

COMPETENCY AS
CARING IN NURSING

 A multi awarded Filipino American who was born in 1954 and a registered Nurse, a native
of Dumaguete City

 He earned his PhD in Nursing from the University of the Philippines in 1988, and his MA in
Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Silliman University in the Philippines in
1978 and 1976 respectively

 a Professor of Nursing at Tokushima University (Japan), a Professor Emeritus of

Florida Atlantic University (United States), and a Visiting Professor at Universities in
Thailand, Uganda, and the Philippines.
OVERVIEW OF THE THEORY

 Technological competency as caring is the skilled demonstration of intentional,

deliberate, and authentic activities by experienced nurses who practice in environments
requiring technological expertise. It is the harmonious coexistence between
technologies and caring in nursing. The harmonization of these concepts places the
practice of nursing within the context of modern healthcare and acknowledges that
these concepts can co-exist
The Process of Nursing

 Knowing: The process of knowing person is guided by technological knowing in

which persons are appreciated as participants in their care rather than as objects of
care
 Designing: Both the nurse and the one nursed (patient) plan a mutual care process
from which the nurse can organize a rewarding nursing practice that is responsive to
the patient’s desire for care.
Participation in appreciation: The simultaneous practice of conjoined activities
which are crucial to knowing persons. In this stage of the process is the alternating
rhythm of implementation and evaluation.

Verifying knowledge: The continuous, circular process demonstrates the ever-

changing, dynamic nature of knowing in nursing. Knowledge about the person that
is derived from knowing, designing, and implementing further informs the nurse and
the one nursed
PARADIGM CONCEPTS

Environment
 There are four metaparadigm concepts:
 Health - Patient participate in their own health.
Nursing
 Nursing - a discipline and a specialized practice that Person
uses technologies to individualize care to meet the
unique needs of the person

Health
PARADIGM CONCEPTS

 Environment - is in the surroundings that use technology. such as a critical

care unit to understand the persons as a complete moment by moment.

 Person - The person who is also the recipient of nursing care has desires,
dreams, and ambitions are to live life completely as caring persons.
NURSING IMPLICATIONS

In Rozanno Locsin’s Theory, the importance of technological competency

among nurses are very useful and significant.
The environment in which nurses practice today is remarkably different from
the way they practiced just few years ago.
As nursing heads in the direction of becoming more technology-focused, this
theory will only become more relevant.
In the current climate of nursing it is all too important for a nurse to be
competent in the use of technology.
NURSING IMPLICATIONS

The lack of competence with the use of technology places patients at risk and has a
direct impact on the quality of care that they receive.
Technology is only going to become more integrated and complicated and this theory
works to address how it impacts patient care.
It is the responsibility of the nurse to use the many different technologies competently
in order to gain their patients trust.
NURSING IMPLICATIONS

One example of Locsin’s theory as applied to nursing service:

Nurses treating patients on life sustaining machines must be proficient in the use of
the technologies and must focus their caring to the person and not to the machines.
As nurses, it is important to realize our feelings towards these technologies and
understand the effect it has on our caring of patients.
