SENTENCING

SOFTWARE
1. WHAT IS “SENTENCING SOFTWARE” ALL
ABOUT?
• “Sentencing Software” is an algorithm that helps the judge to decide on how severe
the criminal’s sentence would be. It assesses the criminals.
• In the mid-1990’s criminal sentencing software were developed.
• COMPAS-Its function is to assess the likelihood of a defendant becoming a recidivist.
• NORTHPOINTE WAS FOUNDED in 1989 by Tim Brennan and Dave Wells.
Criminogenic needs includes “criminal personality” “social isolation,” “substance
abuse” and “residence/stability.”
2. WHAT FACTORS OR EVENTS LED TO THIS
DILEMMA?

• Crime rates-Up until the early 1990’s, crime rate all over the world has be
rising, especially in Western Europe and the US.
• Innovation could also be one of the factors that led to the “Sentencing
Software” to be made.
• California Crime Time is an example of software that tracks criminal
offences and allows the user to identify other people's sentence information
for offences that are comparable to their own.
3. WHAT ARE THE SOCIETAL IMPLICATIONS
OF THIS DILEMMA?

• Judgement of crimes would be fast and the court of law can be more
efficient.
• A machine does not have the emotional and logical understanding of a
human which, I think, is needed in making judgements.
• Biased.
• Incorrect judgements that can ruin lives.
• Private companies might be able to control them remotely.
4. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO QUESTION THE MORAL AND ETHICAL
ISSUES SURROUNDING INNOVATIONS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY?

• Innovation and insanity are two things divided by a very fine line. If we do
not raise questions about the moral and ethical issues surrounding
innovations in science and technology, then the innovators might think that it
is okay to do whatever they think even if it is very risky for the safety of the
people.
5. IN THE FACE OF THIS DILEMMA, WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT TO STUDY STS?
• Science and technology are used in so many good ways that it can change or
even save one’s life. With this, it is vital to have knowledge not just in
memorizing formulas and being the pioneer to a new technology, but also
understanding what the society really needs today. We should be educated in
all three subjects for us to be able to weigh things in mind, know to stop
depending in robotic automation and think with compassion and humanity.
